A step back into ancient Athens. First-year students in Professor T. H. M. Gellar-Goad’s seminar “Beware the Ides, Beware the Hemlock” are transported back to 403 BCE, debating democracy, voting rights and policy as ancient Greeks. Through role-playing games, students explore political conflict and the meaning of citizenship, seeing parallels to modern democracy and even today’s voting challenges.
As Ojasvi Deep (‘28) shared, “The role-playing game helped me understand how democracy depended on active participation, debate and compromise, much like modern policy discussions. This experience has reinforced the importance of voting and political engagement today, as every individual contribution can shape broader societal outcomes. I will be voting in the upcoming election, knowing how important it is to participate in the democratic process.”
