Multiwavelength demultiplexing in high bit-rate optical communication networks
a joint project of the Institute on Laser and Information
Technologies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Troitsk, Moscow region, Russia,
and the Department of Physics, Wake Forest University,Winston-Salem, NC USA
sponsored by the NATO Science for Peace Program
SfP-973686
Project co-directors:
- Richard Williams, williams@wfu.edu
- Vladislav Panchenko, panch@laser.ru
Scientific coordinator:
- Victor Sokolov, sokolov@laser.ru
Objective:
Develop improved add/drop DWDM devices with narrow transmission
window (1 A), having nearly rectangular profile and nearly linear phase variation
across the window, using biharmonic Bragg gratings [1, 2] coupled to side-polished
single-mode fibers.

Activity in the period 4 November 1999 - 31 October 2000:
- All-optical DWDM multplexers/demultiplexers with improved spectral characteristics
based on side-polished single-mode fibers and Biharmonic Bragg Gratings (BBGs)
on functional films of high refractive index were designed.
- PLD technology for depositing functional films of high refractive index
on silica substrates was developed.
- Three-beam holographic technology for fabrication of submicron relief gratings
with phase shifts on III-V semiconductor materials was developed.
- Pilot samples of side-polished single-mode fibers and relief Bragg gratings
on functional films of high refractive index were fabricated.
