Diversity

We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color.

The North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards establish that teachers should strive to create a safe environment for learning for a diverse population of students. There are many different types of learners, and I will work hard to ensure that everyone's needs are accounted for in my classroom. Teachers should accept diversity as part of the community and should take advantage of the educational opportunities that it holds. I feel it is important to establish a community within the classroom from the beginning of the year that will encourage, suppport, and nurture. I will treat all my students equally regardless of their background; however, equality does not mean same. In order to create the equal opportunities for all my students, I will be adaptable and flexible in my teaching methods, present information in multiple styles, and provide students with varying modes of expressing themselves.
