Hints for Art 275: The History of Landscape Architecture

Harry Titus

1.  What is the topography of the site?  How has topography affected the landscape design?

2.  What is the relationship between "hardscape" and planted materials?

3.  What types of horticultural material are present?  How do they function in terms of size, shape, color, scent?  How have they been "composed?"

4.  What are the hardscape features?  Are there roads, paths, water elements, sculpture, painted elements, or other constructed focal points?  What is the system of their arrangement?  Are there privileged "points of view?"

5.  What is the relationship between the landscape features and the dominant architectural element?

6.  Does the landscape treatment have a subject?  Has the patron done something the personalize the landscape?

7.  Are there explicit literary references in the landscape treatment?  Has the site inspired literary responses?
