Art 104 - Topics in World Art, Art and Architecture of India,
Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka
Wouldn't you like to know more about Indian and South Asian art and Architecture? To people familiar with Western art, traditional Indian art appears ornate and sensuous, mysterious and voluptuous. This course will focus on four topics:
1. The influence of religious India - Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Islamic - on traditional art.
2. Art and power during the British Raj fom the 18th to 20th centuries, from both British and Indian perspectives.
3. Modern art and architecture of the post-World War II era after British colonial rule and partition into India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
4. Visual images of India in such western films as "A Passage to India" and "The Jewel in the Crown."
Guest speakers on religion, history, politics, and music. This course fulfills a Division V requirement.
