GOLF DISCS
With nearly 100 discs on the market, the disc golfer can choose a specific disc for nearly any concievable shot; backhand, sidearm, overhead, long, medium, long fade, short turnover.....you get the idea. In the most general terms, though, there are three distance ranges and three types of flight stability. The table below outlines range and flight path, with examples for each combination of range and stability. A short list of disc golf terms can be found here.
| Range/Stability | Understable | Stable | Overstable |
| Long Drives | Cheetah, Stratus
#1 Slice |
Gazelle, Cyclone
#1 Flyer, Polaris LS |
Whippet, X-Clone
#1 Hyzer, Polaris LF |
| Medium Drives | Stingray, Comet
#3 Slice |
Moray, Hawk
#2 Driver, Aurora MS |
Roc, Vortex
#3 Hyzer, Aurora MF |
| Short/Putts | Polecat, Rattler
Upshot |
Aviar, Magnet
Rubber Putter, Omega series |
Piranha |
There is a purely subjective set of examples based on my own disc golf experience. In a beginner's hands, a Cheetah may well be horribly overstable; likewise, a player with a gorilla arm may find the X-Clone too understable. In addition, a disc will tend to become less stable as it wears. Your mileage may vary. Detailed descriptions of most of the discs available can be found at Inflight Sports' web page.
I currently use two sets of golf discs; one for purely low-key recreational play, and one for tournament play. Here's what I use:
Recreational Bag (Wall City Disc Pal)
Right now it's all Discraft. This set varies by mood. It may well be all Millennium next week...
X-Clone 173g, orange; for into-the-wind drives and big hyzer shots.
Cyclone 165g, black; a great long turnover disc.
Cyclone 173g, purple; main long driver. Still holds any angle well. Getting worn, tho...
Cyclone2 173g, white; for long s-turn drives and throws where I really want to crank one.
Vortex 176g, orange; mid-to long hyzer drives. Also mid range drives into a wind.
HD Hawk 173g, white; the workhorse. Holds any angle, mid to long drives, occasional putts.
Comet 180g, yellow; midrange turnover throws. Heavy enough to fade as it slows.
Magnet 173g, green; my putter. Right now getting me some unreal putts.
Tournament Bag (Wall City Round Bag)
X-Clone 173g, orange; for into-the-wind drives and big hyzer shots.
Cyclone 165g, black; a great long turnover disc.
Cyclone 173g, purple; main long driver. Still holds any angle well. Getting worn, tho...
Cyclone2 173g, white; for long s-turn drives and throws where I really want to crank one.
Cheetah 174g, white; for harder turnover drives than the 165 Cyclone gives.
Polaris LS 1.2 172g, white; long, narrow drives where I don't want a fade or a turnover.
#3 Hyzer 174g, marbled grey; midrange hard hyzer drives.
#2 Hyzer 173g, yellow; short, extreme hyzer throws.
Roc 179g, yellow; the Rancho Cucamonga Roc. Workhorse stable driver.
Shark 180g, red; midrange drives with a slight fade.
Cobra 180g, yellow; hard turnover drives and rollers.
#2 Slice 175g, pink; more gradual turnover throws.
Omega AP 175g, red; backup putter, utility short to midrange drives.
Magnet 173g, green; primary putter.
