Pumpkin Goose

Pumpkin Escher: Goose
October 27, 2007

This is based on an MC Escher Bird Tessellation.

The Lizard pumpkin lasted only a couple of days before it melted and fell apart. I decided to try another tessellation using only two "colors", black and orange. This allows me to keep the pumpkin's structural support while still showing a pattern.

I drew the design on paper and wrapped it over the pumpkin. I did have to adjust the top and bottom to work with the spherical shape of the pumpkin. Pumpkin Escher Goose

Applying much pressure to a pen, I traced over the pattern and pressed the design into the pumpkin. I took the paper off of the pumpkin and went over it again with the pen.

Next, I trace the design with a utility knife.

The blue tape indicates the part of the design that will remain on the pumpkin. I carved out the areas that had no tape. The cut is only about 1/2 inch into the surface.
