Entertainment Center

Feb, 2008

In January, I started building a new entertainment center. I built a corner hutch unit that will replace a bulky rectangular unit. The area behind the current unit is full of wires and the cats like to play back there.

A major goal of the project is to keep the cats away from the electronics. Each shelf will have a door and it will be closed off from the cats.

I installed fans in the back of each shelf to vent the heat. I wanted the fans to come on automatically and only when necessary. So I put down the hammer and saw and picked up the soldering iron. I am now learning electronics. These pages are various parts of this project I found worthy of documenting. The design is inspired by this web page.

Finished! After four months, I'm finally finished. I moved out the old entertainment center and installed the new one today. The room seems much bigger with the more efficient use of space, and the cats can no longer play with the wires.

The cooling system works well. But, it does not get as hot as often as I thought it would.
I used the hairdryer to test the cooling system to make sure the system works.
