Computer Science 352/652 and Mathematics 326/626: Numerical Linear Algebra with MATLAB - Fall 2009

Math. 326/626 and Comp. Sci. 352/652: "Applied Numerical Linear Algebra with MATLAB", Fall 2009

Staff

The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:45am in Manchester 124.

Prerequisites and Course Motivation

Elementary calculus. Beginning knowledge of linear algebra. Matlab will be used for the computer projects. Prior experience in using Matlab or in computer programming are not prerequisites. Practical applications of numerical linear algebra will be emphasized.

Course Text

Topics Include

Fundamentals of elementary linear algebra, orthogonalization and least squares problems, floating point arithmetic, numerical conditioning and stability, systems of equations, eigenvalues, optimization and iterative mthods in linear algebra.

Problem Sets, Exams & Grading

There will be 3 problem sets (mostly computer projects), informal homework, a midterm (take-home), and a final exam (take-home). Homework effort will be used to resolve marginal grade cases. Course grades will be determined using the following weighting: Projects and Problem Sets - 3 at 10% each, Midterm - 30%, and Final Exam - 40%.
