1. Pick-up and drop-off procedures. This
is a 24-hour take-home exam. You can pick up (and later drop off)
the exam with my secretary Ms. Mickie Speas (Room 3340) from 9:00
am to 3:00 pm on any of the following dates. She will note
the time you pick up the exam. You will then have twenty-four
(24) hours from that time to drop it off with her.
| Pick-up dates |
Drop-off dates |
| Monday, December 8 |
Tuesday, December 9 |
| Tuesday, December 9 |
Wednesday, December 10 |
| Wednesday, December 10 |
Thursday, December 11 |
| Thursday, December 11 |
Friday, December 12 |
| Monday, December 15 |
Tuesday, December 16 |
| Tuesday, December 16 |
Wednesday, December 17 |
| Wednesday, December 17 |
Thursday, December 18 |
| Thursday, December 18 |
Friday, December, 19 |
For example, if you pick up the exam at 10:30
am on Thursday, December 6, you must drop it off by 10:30 am
on Friday, December 7. If you are late, Ms. Brookshire
will note this. For every hour or part of an hour that your
exam is late, I will lower your grade by 10 points. (For example,
an exam that is 1 hour, 4 minutes late would result in a loss
of 20 points.) Please save us this anguish and return
your exam on time!
| Note from CLRIC
As always, we will reserve 9 carrels in
the CLRIC for self scheduled, and/or open book exams. These
carrels will be clearly marked and are available on a first
come first serve basis.
If you have a student who would like to
set aside a specific time, please have them come and see me
and I will work out something with them.

2. Open book exam - no research. You
may refer to any materials that you had when you picked up the
exam: casebook, statutory supplement, treatises,
study aids, notes, outlines -- including any materials accessible
from the course website. The materials you use can be hand-written,
typed, printed or stored electronically. You may not, however,
conduct any additional research during the exam.
3. Vow of silence. Once you have
picked up your exam, you may not communicate about the exam
with anyone until after the exam period, which ends at 3:00
pm on Friday, December 19. Nothing, nada, not
at all! Moreover, if you have not taken the exam,
you must avoid any communications with anyone who already has
taken it. This rule is overbroad. It applies even
if both of you have taken the exam. In addition, you may
not make a copy of your exam, which you must return when you
turn in your paper.
4. The exam. The exam is divided into
two parts.
(1) Short essays. The first part is
a series of six questions that call for short essays. The
suggested line/word count is 15 lines / 200 words for each
question.
(2) Long essay. The second part
consists of one question calling for a longer essay. The
suggested line/word count is 60 lines / 800 words.
You will have time to review and modify your
answers. Organization, succinctness and thorough analysis will
be at a premium.
5. Budget your words. Each question
has a suggested line count and word count in parentheses --
this is also the weight I will give to each answer.
| |
Word count |
Word total |
| Short essays - 6 |
200 words / question |
1200 words |
| Long essays - 1 |
800 words / essay |
800 words |
| TOTAL |
|
2000 words |
You can allocate lines and words to the exam
answers as you choose, but the exam's total word limit is 2000
words. (Most word processors give you a word count -- "File -
Document Info" in WordPerfect or "File - Properties -
Statistics" in Word.)
6. Format your exam paper. Number your
answers clearly. Observe standard margins. Single-space
your answers; double-space between answers. Back up frequently
-- really!
Your paper should include a header as follows:
BusOrg - Palmiter (Fall 2003)
Exam # _______
In addition, at the top of the first page,
include the following two things:
- state the paper's total word count
- hand-write your exam number -- your
acknowledgement that you have read, understood and complied
with these exam instructions and your honor code obligations
in taking this exam.
7. When you finish. Keep an electronic
copy of your exam paper. Print your paper and turn it into my
secretary Ms. Peggy Brookshire, along with the exam itself..
(If printing your exam paper poses a difficulty, you may turn
in a diskette labeled with your exam number and the document's
word-processing format.) In addition, don't forget to
return your copy of the exam.
HAVE FUN!
GOOD LUCK!
