FIRST CLASS
First class, Monday August 18, 2003 - Welcome to Bus Org!

For the first day, please -

  • read the Syllabus
  • review the course outline - Materia (this contains links to daily outlines, with a list of topics, problems and supplemental readings / the daily outlines also link to daily class notes)
  • read the first casebook assignment (Bauman, Weiss & Palmiter, pages 1-12)
  • read the outline for first class (see if you can figure out the essential seven elements of the corporate contract using the table of contents of the Model Business Corporation Act)
  • Oh, yes, why Warren Buffett and Bill Gates - and the insipid spinning $20 bill?  This is a course about the building block of modern capitalism, the private business organization.  The best-known examplar is the corporation, which brings together specialized labor and dispersed capital in a for-profit association.

Consider this question.  Back when Bill Gates started Microsoft and was looking for start-up money, and when Warren Buffett started Bershire Hathaway and was looking for value investments, what terms would the contract between financier Warren Buffett and entrepreneur Bill Gates have included?  What are the essential elements of every business organization?
