As a growing educator, I believe that leadership is an important quality to possess in both the classroom and general school environment. Teachers must take control of their students' learning and work diligently to make each student as successful as they can be. I also believe that a good teacher leads her classroom by being efficient and clear when she sets goals for the class. Good leaders must have a specific target in mind when they set out to accomplish something; in the classroom this relates to how specific and clear a teacher's methods for assessment will be.
Teachers also must lead in the school community by participating in committees and taking a genuine interest in the school's progress and growth. Teachers should always be looking toward how the school can be improved and use their skills to assist in any way needed. Holding a leadership role in the school can also facilitate good communication between teachers. Support and cooperation are crucial to helping one's peers become more effective in the classroom.
Making a home-school connection is another demonstration of good leadership in the classroom. Teachers should make a sincere effort to communicate with parents and guardians frequently about their intentions and goals for the class. A way to convey class information efficiently is through a weekly or monthly newsletter. This is a great way for parents to learn about upcoming activities, and also to see how students have been progressing so far in the year.
Teachers must be leaders if they want to be the best educators they can be. Not only will teachers demonstrate leadership by working to improve school environment, but a being good leaders also shows students just how much an effective leader can accomplish when they are passionate about something.
