In my role as a teacher, it is my job to convey the proper information to my students and to ensure that they understand it thoroughly. In using the North Carolina competency goals and objectives as my guide, I will teach my students a specific set of material that I should understand myself. Yes, teacher should know the content they are teaching, but they should also go above and beyond to learn even more about the subject. When anecdotal stories or interesting facts are added to daily instructions, students are engaged and more motivated to learn.
Another way to engage students is to teach integrated lessons. Students are much more apt to grasp concepts if they can express their knowledge in multiple ways. I think that creativity and the arts should be incorporated into as many lessons as possible to give students the opportunity to choose how they convey their understanding. Many lessons also allow themselves to bring in concepts from other subjects to give students a well-rounded view of education. It is a teacher's job to help students see the connections between math, science, social studies, reading, and writing so that they can be successful in the classroom.
