In terms of mathematical content, this project uses graph theory, a topic often omitted from most courses and only included specifically in the course of study for Discrete Mathematics. This project could be implemented in any class from algebra to pre-calculus, as it provides a good exercise not only in technology use, but also in reasoning and sense-making as encouraged by the NCTM. Learners on a number of different levels will be able to be successful, as will learners with little or a large amount of exposure to graph theory. The project specifically addresses the N.C. Standard Course of Study for Discrete Math (Objective 1.02), the overarching objective, students will be able to collect online data, represent it in both a spreadsheet and using graph theory, and analyze the resulting graph to make decisions, and also applies to a number of NETS and 21st Century Skills.

Specifically, the project addresses the NETS*S Creativity and Innovation Standard, as it requires students to use computer generated models to solve problems, and the NETS*S Research and Information Fluency Standard, as students get their information from the Internet. Other NETS*S standards are addressed in less direct ways. NETS*T standards, such as designing and developing digital-age learning experiences and assessment and also modeling digital-age work and learning, are also demonstrated. This project also helps students develop 21st Century Skills, specifically Core Subjects and 21st Century themes, seeing how they can use technology in relation to this core subject.

At the conclusion of the project, students will be assessed through group work and an individual reflection, which will be evaluated using a given rubric. Students will be given opportunities in both the group work and their individual reflection to show their mastery of the topic at several different levels.
