The foundation to a successful year as a teacher begins with two things: good communication and good knowledge of your students. As a teaching candidate, I have developed the following documents in order to illustrate ways of using basic software packages to communicate with parents efficiently and to manage student data.
Newsletter to Parents/School Community (Example) - Using Microsoft Publisher, teachers can easily create a newsletter to send home to students' parents and other school stakeholders. A beginning of the year newsletter can do wonders for establishing a positive relationship with parents and other stakeholders that will allow you to be successful in gaining their support when in may be needed later in the year.
Spreadsheet of Student Information (Example [all information is ficticious]) - Using Microsoft Excel, teachers can manage large amounts of data about students, from general contact information to more specialized information such as learning preferences and styles. This information allows teachers to personalize everything from forms and documents to lessons with information specific to each student.
Letter to Parents (Example) - Using Microsoft Word, together with your Excel spreadsheet of student information, teachers can create a personalized letter to parents, whether it is sent out at the beginning of the year or as a mid-semester update. By using personalized information, parents and students believe the teacher is writing a very personal letter, while the teacher creates numerous documents with the push of one simple button.
Student Data Form (Example) - Need more information to complete your Excel spreadsheet? Using just names and pronouns from your Excel spreadsheet, you can create a personalized data form to send home with each of your students. Along with the increased benefits of sending personalized documents as outlined above, such a document will make parents feel more comfortable sharing information with you about their child.
