[Someone] asked [about] Li and lifebreath. [Zhu Xi] said: "[Cheng] Yi-chuan] explained it well: 'Li is one and its differentiations many.' If we speak of Heaven, Earth, and the myriad creatures taken together, [then] there is only one Li. When we look at [its expression in] individual human beings then each has his or her own individual li. [Recorded by the disciple Kui Sun.]
Commentary:
This passage contrasts li on a cosmic scale with li on the scale of individual human beings. The subject of the last clause is not stated, making the statement somewhat ambiguous. I think it is justifiable to add the words "its expression in", but others may not accept this interpretation. It is possible, in other words, that there is no connection intended between the "one Li" that pertains to "Heaven, Earth, and the myriad creatures taken together" and "[each person's] individual li." But if that were true, it would be like mentioning the World Wide Web and a spider web in the same sentence without even implying an analogy between them -- a very unlikely thing to do. -- PEM
