Text from Wesleyan e-text project, checked against Zhu Zi Yu-lei Da-quan text.

[Zhu Xi said:] "There is no lifebreath in the world that is without its li, and no li in the world that is without its lifebreath."

Note: Lifebreath produces forms and li is endowed therein.

[Recorded by the disciple Zhu.]

PEM Commentary:

Be sure to note that the words of Zhu Xi quoted above pertain to things "in the world." The Tai-ji is called a Li, but it is not "in the world," and there is never anything said by Zhu Xi to the effect that there is a Lifebreath that corresponds to it. In other words, there is no entity such that Li (or Tai-ji) is its aspect of form and Lifebreath is its aspect of materiality. |||
