Acknowledgments

Special thanks to Prof. John D. Stone of Grinnell College for help in creating the "housekeeping" part of these programs, the part that checks the student's answers against mine, records their mistakes and how far they have gone through each program, etc.

Drawings of ancient characters used in the four-sided flashcards are after Gao Shu-fan in his Xing-yin-yi Zong-he Da Zi-dian.

Many of the drawings in the first ten programs entitled First Steps in Chinese are by my friend, Charlotte Elsner. Others are by various student artists who have worked for me from time to time. A few are after Liao Wei- qiang in his book of illustrations, Cha-tu-hua ji, published by Da-zhong tu-shu gong-si, Taipei, Taiwan, 1975. Several others are copied from a wonderful primer intended for young students of the Chinese language living in Thailand. I have no publication information on this book, a copy of which was provided to me by a returning Peace Corps volunteer, and have been unable to track down book or author, so if anyone recognizes the illustrations and knows the name of the artist, please let me know. Recently, a recent graduate of Wake Forest University, Mr. Jonathan Thomas, has added many drawings to this project.
