In order to have NetScape properly display Chinese characters, you must have installed the Chinese Language Kit and also its simplified character font or fonts. Then go into the Options menu and select Preferences. When the Preferences window shows on your screen, "mouse" on "Window and Link Styles," and then select "Font and Color." When that screen comes up, you will see four boxes arrayed vertically. Fix the first box so that it shows Latin1, the second box so that it shows Kai 18, the third box so that it shows Beijing 12, and the fourth box so that it shows MacRoman. You should then be able to see Chinese screens in Hanzi where formerly you saw garbage. If you reenter the same fonts menu later on, you may find that the first box has changed itself back to Japanese, and that the second and third boxes show different alternatives, but if you change the first box back to Latin1 then the two Chinese fonts will reappear. Apparently NetScape is shifting automatically between two sets of alternatives. By the way, if you don't have Kai you can use Beijing for the second choice. Set the font sizes according to your own preferences. Here is a sample of text in simplified characters that you can read with NetScape set up for the GB fonts: ,
这是直接用GB来写的.
If you prefer traditional characters, then set your fonts to Apple LiSung Light 24 and Taipei 12 to read:
硂琌钡ノBig-5ㄓ糶.
You will only be able to read one of the two lines of text, i.e., whichever line your copy of NetScape is set up to read. The other line may show a very peculiar selection of Hanzi, but it won't make any sense.
