Plan Your Own Trip
to Asia or Africa!!!

INTRODUCTION:
Summer has finally arrived
and you and your friends have each been given $3,000 for an ten day trip!
The destination of your trip is to any place in Africa or Asia. As you
have learned in social studies class, there are many exciting destinations
in both Africa and Asia. It is up to you and your friends to plan a fun-filled
yet educational trip within your budget!
TASK
1: EXCEL PROJECT
Decide on one trip for you
and your group of friends.
Using the internet, you and
your friends must each research an individual destination and then make
a comparison between the four different places in order to determine the
group's destination.
1. Make a comparison based
on the following variables: roundtrip airline ticket cost, lodging cost
(for all eight days), food and entertainment cost, and number of attractions/recreational
activities.
2. Utilize Excel to create
a workbook.
a.
Worksheet One should include a description of each group members individual
trip of choice. Also include
a scale for making comparisons (i.e. Rank each persons ticket cost on a
scale of 1 to 10 where one is most expensive and 10 is cheapest; do the
same for lodging cost, food and entertainment cost, and number of attractions).
b. Worksheet
Two will be a spreadsheet which shows the total scores for each group members
destination.
c. Worksheet
Three will be a graph/chart that represents the results of your groups
destinations analysis.

TASK
2: GROUP POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
Your group must compare the
four seperate destinations to Africa and/or Asia and choose one trip destination
for the whole group. Once all group members have agreed upon the ONE trip
destination, the group must work together to budget the trip and plan an
itinerary.
As a group, you must:
-
Choose the best travel date (keep
in mind that this trip is during the summer months)
-
Show the estimated travel time
per destination per day
-
Develop a spreadsheet showing
daily expenses per person
-
Include two different graphs/charts
of the budget (includes: airfare cost, lodging cost, food and entertainment
cost)
-
Include some history about your
groups destination

TASK
3: INDIVIDUAL REPORT
Each group member must write
a minimum of two double-spaced pages about this group project. The following
should be addressed in this paper:
-
What math skills did you use for
this project?
-
How did math assist you in your
decision making?
-
What other subjects did you use
(give specific examples)?
-
How difficult was it to incorporate
the criteria used for selecting your vacation based on an individual $3,000
budget? Could you have spent less?
-
How well does this project relate
to real life events? Do you think the knowledge acquired in this project
can be used in other situations? How so?
-
Think about the sources of information
you used in this project (i.e. internet). Do you think they improved your
final project?
-
Consider your experiences as a
team member. What did you learn about your own team skills? What did you
do well and what could you improve?

HINTS
The following suggests steps
to take to complete this project. While doing this assignment, ask yourself,
"What values are most important to ensure optimum enjoyment of my trip?"
Most of all, have FUN with this assignment! Planning a trip is a process
you will do over and over throughout your life.
-
Establish group responsibilities
-
Set deadlines for your group
-
When deciding travel dates, consider
most economical airfare (i.e. weekend travel vs. weekday).
accommodations costs (i.e. extended stay discounts), recreational activities
(make sure you consider weather conditions).
-
Consider travel time vs. time
available at your destination (For a trip as far as Africa or Asia two
of your days will be spent traveling).
-
List individual criteria's for
the trip and from those lists develop a group criteria list (i.e. desired
activities).
-
Once trip has been decided upon,
designate individual responsibilities for the planning process (i.e. airline
reservations, booking accommodations, activity coordinator, etc.). Decide
upon individual roles for the group presentation. BE CREATIVE!
