Pedagogy

Teachers know the ways learning takes place, use a variety of methods, are expert communicators, have strong technology skills, plan instruction that is appropriate, use a variety of tools, teach critical thinking and problem solving skills, help students develop skills of teamwork, leadership, and cooperation, and instill a love of learning

-Wake Forest University's Conceptual Framework

One of the most important things a teacher can do is to inspire a student. Being able to light a flame under a student’s academic career takes time, effort and energy that I am willing to put forth.  Understanding learning theories and how to most effectively reach and impact students, I will be able to scaffold my lessons in a more efficient manner.  Having an understanding of the student’s backgrounds and preferences, I believe every student can enjoy and even come to love learning and being in school if the teaching is relevant to their lives. Lectures and traditional classroom lessons are not effective methods for reaching every student.  Creativity, innovation and variety when teaching is a must.  It doesn’t matter if my classroom is completely homogenous or if every student has a different learning style; I must be able to reach each student.  Using technology in my classroom will help me reach all types of learners because I will be able to use multiple means of representation during the lesson.  In the classroom it is important for me to act more like a coach than a dictator.  My goal is to have every student be successful, but when they are struggling, I will do whatever necessary to make sure they can succeed.

Here are some sample lessons and student work from my experience in the field.
