Paul Meets "Death"

I experienced the following dream in 1995.
This happened exactly as I have described it and it is as hard for me to believe as it might be to you.

Synchronicity of Dreams.

I was standing in an open area that was without outstanding features. I noticed a figure approaching me from ahead of me and just off to the right. As it came closer I saw it was a figure of human shape but with no details. It was a tall grayish figure that's mass seemed to be less than totally opaque and moved with more of a hover than walking. I realized I was being visited by the embodiment of death, the Grim Reaper himself.

Strangely I wasn't afraid. He came up to me and we exchanged pleasantries. I asked him what he wanted me for, thinking my "time" had come. Instead of saying I had died he told me he was reaching the end of his time and had hand picked me to replace him upon his retirement. I let him know this sounded OK to me. He said we would go and visit his apartment so I could see how he lived as it would be mine along with his job. He took my hand and we gently and soundlessly flew to his place.

His apartment was a small "studio" type place in a city. It had a kitchenette, living area and a sleeping area with a single cot like bed. I looked at the bed and noticed something strange. One end of the bed had a shimmering distortion of the air coming up off it, like heat off hot asphalt but there was no actual heat. The foot of the bed had a similar effect but markedly less intense. I brought this observation to his attention and he said the stronger end is where he lays his head when he sleeps and other end is where his head used to be before he switched to the current arrangement. The living area had a TV that was on, showing a Disney movie in which people were in some kind of conflict with the Grim Reaper. I thought this was an unusual coincidence but said nothing.

I awoke from the dream and only moments later the radio/alarm clock went off. The song playing on the radio caused my heart to miss a couple beats. The classic rock station it is tuned to was playing "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, a song popular in the late Seventies. I gasped "Oh, my God!!!!" and sat up in bed waking my wife, startled by my exclamation. I told her what happened and it gave her the "creeps".

I have been a very lucid dreamer all my life. The dream itself is cause for deep thought, but the synchronicity of the dream and the radio song continue to haunt me to this day.

A couple years later I had a "follow up" dream that is further cause for thought. Read it HERE.
