GUIDELINES FOR PERSONAL JOURNAL
COMM 113 Relational Communication
Spring 2009

Journal Requirements

Throughout the semester, you are required to submit three "personal journals" of your experiences in applying the activities from your lab in your interactions with others. Specifically, you are asked to apply lab activities to your life experiences and to write about this in a critical and reflective manner. Exact guidelines and requirements follow:

1) Specifications: 2 pages typed, double-spaced. Include at the top of the paper personal identification, including lab section, day, and time.

Each journal submission will be worth 5% of your final course grade

2) You may consider the implications and/or application of a lab theme. This will most likely be reflective but you could engage others, trying some aspect of an exercise or some observation concerning interactions you observed or in which you participated. If you apply an exercise be sure the rights of others are respected, including privacy and safety (e.g., provide them with some form of prior knowledge or agreement to participate in your activity and debriefing.)

3) Your write-up may include the following information:

a. What happened. If you‘re referencing some experience provide enough information to provide a context for the reader. Please keep this section brief. You may choose to avoid "Real life" names.

b. Describe what you thought and how you felt (reacted) while participating in the event, how other(s) responded or felt.

c. Discuss how this exercise altered your knowledge and understanding of interpersonal communication. Emphasize your analysis, application, insights. In other words, "SO WHAT?" You may find it helpful to reference materials from essays in the text, lectures, or published articles to frame YOUR analysis.

4) Due Dates for Journal submission Feb 5th, Feb. 26th, April 16th or 23th

5) Check with your lab instructor to see how they would like journals for their lab submitted. They may allow electronic submission under limited circumstances.
