Claire Holton Hammond graduated from Mary Washington College in 1973 with a BA in Economics and Mathematics. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1982. Her dissertation, "The Benefits of Subsidized Housing Programs: An Intertemporal Approach," won the Irving Fisher Award for Best Dissertation in Economics in the United States in 1984 and was subsequently published by Cambridge University Press in 1987. She has been at Wake Forest since 1978 and regularly teaches the Intermediate Microeconomics sequence. Other courses include Antitrust Economics and Economics of Industry. She and her husband, Dan, also a professor at Wake Forest University, are the parents of three children. An article about Claire and her husband Dan appeared in the September 1997 edition of Wake Forest Magazine.
