- Grading Policy
- Homework will be assigned and graded on a regular basis. There will
be two one-hour exams given during the semester about four weeks apart.
A comprehensive three-hour final exam will be given at the end of the semester.
Your semester grade will be determined by the total number of points earned
out of 600 possible points. Each hour exam will be worth 150 points, your
homework will be worth 100 points, and the final exam will be worth
200 points. Good exposition will be expected on homework--points will be
deducted for incomplete sentences, unlabeled answers, lack of justification,
omission of important details, and sloppy work. Regular attendance as well
as diligent effort are essential for achieving success in this course.
Graduate students will
be expected to learn certain assigned topics on their own,
and then present lectures
explaining to the rest of the class what they have learned. Graduate
students will also be expected to write up proofs requiring greater
mathematical maturity than expected of undergraduate students.
The study of mathematics involves a never-ceasing struggle to
understand concepts which initially are learned incompletely or even
incorrectly. To clarify ideas, it is important that you discuss your
perceptions with others in order to expose misconceptions and to
further your understanding. I encourage you to talk mathematics with
your classmates, and with me on a regular basis.
Please come see me during my office hours,
or at any time which is mutually convenient.
