Remote Viewing The Hawai'i Remote Viewing Group (HRVG) is a "skill-based association of people interested in the Research and Development of Remote Viewing." They practice various techniques to try to perfect this technique. Some of the members of HRVG ("the claimants") decided that they should try to demonstrate their abilities by trying for the $1.2 million prize offered by the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF). Because HRVG is a non-profit organization, HRVG did not itself participate in the test. JREF's policy is that before offering a fully controlled test, they ask the claimants to demonstrate their abilities to a representative chosen by them, and JREF asked TASC to perform this task. Ten pictures were sent by the claimants to me, folded so that I could not inadvertently look at them. I chose one at random, and over the following week they had their viewers attempt to predict which picture it was I chose. For example, the sketch (below center) was one of the pictures contributed by a "viewer" as he attempted to see the picture I had chosen. On the basis of this, the organizer concluded that the picture at left, a statue of King Kamehameha, was the one I had chosen. But in fact the picture I had chosen was the one at right, of the astronomical SWAT laser.
The process was repeated two more times, where I picked two new pictures, and they attempted to guess which pictures I had chosen. The results are summarized in the table below. In three attempts, they correctly guessed none of the three pictures.
The claimants expressed an interest in repeating the test in the future, though it is the policy of JREF to only allow one opportunity per year. We have agreed to assist in such tests, either as a part of a formal JREF test or informally, to allow them to practice for a future attempt at the JREF prize. The claimant has posted his own analysis of the experiment, which you can find at: http://home.hawaii.rr.com/cooljerk/ More details about this investigation are available in our Newsletter, Skeptically Speaking send
