I'm Not My Brother's Keeper:
Leadership and Civil Rights
in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Written and Directed by Mary M. Dalton, this documentary tells the story of Wake Forest College and Winston-Salem Teachers College students who were arrested together on February 23, 1960. Theirs was the first arrest of the lunch counter sit-in demonstrations, and their efforts resulted in the first lunch counter victory in the South three months later. "I found their stories compelling, but my real motivation in making this documentary was to share the story with students today," says Dalton. "I wanted them to see that students can become engaged in the political process, work for social justice, and make a real difference in the quality of our lives." With support from the Wake Forest University Fund for Ethics and Leadership, this documentary has been distributed to all public, university, college, and community college libraries in North Carolina.

The documentary aired on North Carolina Public Television and has been screened at various conferences and festivals.
