Time spent one-on-one helping

How much time is needed?

Depends on:
the child

Normally 2-5 minutes
some need more time, more often
some need less time, less often

May have a system of when to see whom
What are other children doing while you hold conferences?
•
Writing! Start a new story if stuck
•
No Interruptions – only emergencies
keep a STOP sign on the desk when conferences are in session
may institute the “Blood or Barf” rule
teacher wears a hat when not to be interrupted

Be consistent in sending interrupters away
•
PRACTICE PROCEDURES with your class – these are critical!
