We use tiger moths as models to study many aspects of the evolution of animal communication. Tiger moths use amazing chemical and acoustic (ultrasonic) signals to mediate mate choice and species recognition.

We also work on predator/prey interactions. The main predators of nocturnal moths are bats. Tiger moths answer the echolocation cries of bats with ultrasonic clicks. Are they jamming the bat sonar or are they advertizing that they are unpalatable? We want to know.
