PHY113: General Physics I

Calculus based introductory physics, corequisite: MTH 111 or 106 or equivalent.

Please note that calculus is NOT a PRErequisite. All that is required to begin the class is a solid understanding of algebra. Concern about the math causes many students to put off physics until their junior or senior year. However, you will be much better off taking physics sooner.

You must also register for the PHY113 lab.

Homework will be done using a web based service called WebAssign. See below for more information.

Syllabus

Text: Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 7th edition by Serway and Jewett. This text comes in two volumes (Vol. I chapters 1-22, and Vol II chapters 23-46). Only the first 22 chapters are covered in PHY 113; the rest are covered in PHY 114.

There are different ISBN numbers for the various versions in paperback and hardcover; just make sure you get the 7th edition. The single codex edition (Volumes I and II combined) is ridiculously heavy. The two codex edition is recomended if you plan to only take the first course, or if you wish to avoid serious back injury. Used copies are available from many sources including Amazon and possibly the university bookstore.

You will also need . . .

If you purchase the full edition from the bookstore, it comes bundled with 3 license codes for WebAssign (i.e. 3 semesters). If you purchase Volumes I or II from the bookstore, each comes with one license code. Purchased separately, a single license code is $27.50 at the bookstore, or $25 on-line..
