The Isotopes began racing in the fall of 2005. Eddie and Todd initiated the name in the sprint adventure race the Gauntlet organised by Mark. The name was choosen because Eddie and Todd are both avid Simpson fans. Since then the team has expanded to regularly include Mark and Christine. Each Isotope brings a different element to the table, racing well together.

The Isotopes have a core team of four but many others have raced with the Topes. A few great racers from the past are: Kate Flynn, TJ Peele, Shelley Batteau, Mandolyn Vendela., Lori Amico, and Krem.

I started racing about 2 years ago. It has been a void filler for me, coming from a background in college athletics. I love to train for that upcoming race. Pushing myself to be in shape and being able to take punishment that race organizations throw at you. Adventure Racing is all about the mind, body,
and spirit. When your legs want to quit, your heart and mind will never allow it to happen. Completing a race is such an achievement and bonding experience. Being able to race with teammates going through the same physical and mental ebb and flow of a race solidifies and unites racers together on a special determination level.

I fell into adventure racing my first year of graduate school. A couple of my friends were training for a triathlon, and I decided to train with them. The race
itself was on a weekend I couldn’t do, but they saw that there was an adventure race up in Hampton Roads a couple weeks earlier. I did that sprint race and loved it, and ever since have been trying to convince my friends to do as many races as we can afford. I love going out and racing and seeing
places that most people won’t ever find, that you’d never see or even think to look at unless you were wandering around at three in the morning looking
for that elusive checkpoint…

I began adventure racing in fall of 2006, my second year of grad school. My first race was a Hampton Roads adventure race with Todd and Eddie. It was a new experience for me that was challenging both mentally and physically and I loved every minute. Since then each race has offered unique challenges, great memories and amazing scenery. I love pushing through the exhaustion during long races and have a lot of fun training and racing with my teammates.
