Diversity

WFU DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:

Teachers demonstrate their belief that diversity is a strength, treat students as individuals, know and respect the influence of race, ethnicity, gender, and religion on a child’s development, adapt their teaching to students with special needs, and work collaboratively with the families of their students.

In today's culturally-diverse society, I will work to encourage a classroom environment that is inviting, inclusive, and supportive of all. According to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, it is my responsibility to embrace diversity in the school community and in the world. To do so, I will develop lesson plans and select materials that will counteract stereotypes and incorporate contributions of all cultures. It is important for me to recognize how diverse students' cultures may influence their school performance, and I will do my best to incorporate different points of view in my instruction.

In addition, I will make sure that I adapt my teaching for the benefit of students with special needs. Through inclusion and other models of effective practice, I will work to engage students with special needs, and ensure that they receive the attention they need.

Finally, I recognize the importance of working collaboratively with the families and predominant caregivers in the lives of my students. Therefore, I will make sure to establish effective communication between the school, home, and community, and seek solutions to overcome cultural or economic obstacles that might prevent essential family and community involvement in the lives of my students.
