Dear Dr. Weigel,

Congratulations on your well earned retirement. Many thanks for helping to set me, and many others, on a path to not only a career, but a true appreciation for squirrels, owls, and salamanders.

Best Regards,

Pete,

From the year I entered the department until now it's been great to have you as colleague and friend. We share a love of the Appalachians - their ecology, natural history and the beauty of the mountains. We've co-authored some papers together. I personally know a number of students who have benefited from your advice, wisdom and patience.

Regards,
Bob

Congratulations, Dr. Weigl! Your biology class was one of my favorite classes at Wake Forest and I have enjoyed keeping up with your achievements over the years. You will be missed by all your students and Wake will be losing a wonderful professor who had a knack for making biology come to life and who truly cared about the well-being of his students. Thank you and lots of luck!

Pete,
Here to experience and experiences, 70 mile and hour winds on top of Roan Mountain, persimmons, squirrels, frog hair, “motherhood” and all the rest. Thanks for everything! Maybe next spring we can make time to cheek the vernal pool for salamanders.

Congratulations on 40+ years of a wonderful career at Wake Forest. It was a privilege to have taken classes from you as part of my Master's education. And although you were not on my advising committee, we did have John Foil in common....ah those snapping turtles!

It has been good to see you now and again the past couple of years as I return to the Reynolda Campus via the IACUC.

I wish you happiness and contentment in this next phase of your life.

I still remember meeting you for the first time. In August 1972, I was a freshman arriving on campus for a pre-orientation retreat. You walked over with a welcoming smile, stuck out your hand and said Hi! Im Pete Weigl. I called you Pete as we drove to Camp Hanes and for the remainder of the evening. A very agitated upper classman finally corrected me and you became Dr. Weigl for the next four years.

Ron Dimock is correct when he describes trips with the two of you to Beaufort and Shackleford Banks was an experience of a lifetime. Fellow classmates and I still talk about those trips when we get together and my son enjoys exploring the sound side mud flats almost as much as the ocean side waves on our annual trips to the NC coast.

Thank you for the warmth, interest, and enthusiasm you brought to every class, whether in the lecture hall, the lab, or the field.

Congratulations on your retirement, Pete!

Retirement? What's that? I am not sure you know HOW to retire!
In the rush to do so much, we often forget to thank those who have made vital contributions. Thank you so much for all the passion and unwavering support you have given to biology teaching, both before and after I became part of the biology department. I will never forget the guidance you so freely shared during my first years here, and I hope that I can pass along those lessons to our academic successors.
