In the spring of 1979 I was a student in Dr. Howard's second semester freshman calculus class. After nearly every other class, I found myself standing at Dr. Howard's desk saying the same thing, "Do you have some time when I can stop by for some help?" Dr. Howard was always willing to give me a little extra time. He taught clearly and concisely. Yet, within a few minutes of leaving his office and classroom, my brain would automatically remove all that he had told me. Problably the best lesson I learned that sememster was that math was not my strongsuit.
I'll never forget Dr. Howard for his unfailing kindness to this math-challenged student. Thank you Dr. Howard for all the extra minutes, uh... hours of help. I've always said Dr. Howard was the most gracious professor I ever had. Dr. Howard gave me a passing grade (D) that semester. I slid out of the math department, never to bother such a find and gracious man as Dr. Howard, and moved on to another field of study.
Godspeed to you in retirement.
Rev. Dr. Stephen E Loftis ('82)
