Dr. Howard, your combinatorics and game theory classes are two of my most memorable classes at Wake Forest. I am glad that I had you as my teacher and thank you for helping me out every time I bothered you with questions. You made being a math major enjoyable. Also, thank you for writing a law school recommendation.

Dr Howard, I came to Wake Forest in the Fall of 1981 as a premed student, but by the time I completed your Calculus course, I realized that mathematics was my true calling. I have such wonderful memories of being in your classes, especially Number Theory. Although I have spent the past 25 years in Information Technology, I still find myself drawn to projects that will allow me to apply my mathematics background. Thank you for helping me find a lifelong love of math!

Dr. Howard, I believe that you were the professor of the Applied Math class during the the 68-69 term. I was a student in that class and I belive that you were new to that particular class. We both learned during that year. I have spent the last 40 years in avionics, satellite communications, data communications, etc. The basis for my achievements come from my education at Wake Forest and I consider that Applied Math class one of the best during my time at Wake Forest. My best to you during your retirement. Jim Morton BS Physics 69, MA Physics 73

Hi Fred, I did not know that you were retiring. After reading this page, it looks as if you are really going to be missed! You must be quite an educator, mentor and friend to our students. I wish you the best and hope that I will see you on the courts soon. Kathy

In the spring of 1979 I was a student in Dr. Howard's second semester freshman calculus class. After nearly every other class, I found myself standing at Dr. Howard's desk saying the same thing, "Do you have some time when I can stop by for some help?" Dr. Howard was always willing to give me a little extra time. He taught clearly and concisely. Yet, within a few minutes of leaving his office and classroom, my brain would automatically remove all that he had told me. Problably the best lesson I learned that sememster was that math was not my strongsuit.
I'll never forget Dr. Howard for his unfailing kindness to this math-challenged student. Thank you Dr. Howard for all the extra minutes, uh... hours of help. I've always said Dr. Howard was the most gracious professor I ever had. Dr. Howard gave me a passing grade (D) that semester. I slid out of the math department, never to bother such a find and gracious man as Dr. Howard, and moved on to another field of study.
Godspeed to you in retirement.

My Uncle Ted, known to all of you as Fred, has always been an inspiration to me in my own efforts to be a better teacher and a better person. We share a love for baseball and that is very important to me, but we also share a commitment to truth, authenticity, and personal integrity and his career is a strong testament to the power of that commitment. I am honored to know him.
