Dr. Hendricks, While a student at Wake, I never had you as a professor, but......about five years after graduating, my girlfriend, now my wife of 19 years, audited a N.C. History Course during the evening. I thought I knew it all, but found I did not! My wife was a native of Ohio, and therefore knew little about our state. We thoroughly enjoyed the course and looked forward to it each week as I lived in Greensboro and she lived in Winston. She still laughs about your comment on NC's "First in Flight" license plates where you said "The only thing N.C. contributed to the first flight was wind and sand"! We also remember an older lady taking that course, who had been a elementary school teacher for years. She gave a presentation on the Cradle of Forestry using a film strip and a tape with beeps to advance the strip! Thank you for all you did and continue to do for my alma mater! Pro Humanitate!

Ed -- Congratulations on your service to Wake Forest. I fortunately signed up for your history course when I started at Wake Forest in September 1963. The quality of your teaching was very clear in those early days of your time at Wake Forest and I appreciate everything you did in getting me off to a good beginning in my study of history. I have valued your friendship and support for me and my family over the years and look forward to reading your next book.
Best wishes -- Barry Clendenin

Ed, I echo what Kerry King said. All of us who love Wake Forest should be grateful that we've had someone to carry that love forward in the classroom all these many years. You are a true treasure and I look forward to your book on Wake Forest. See you and Sue at the ballgames!

As my teacher and advisor, you were always such an inspiration and encouraged me to get involved in preservation. Years ago,you first connected me to MESDA, which has made all the difference and for which I thank you. Now as I teach history at Salem Academy, I remember fondly the great days I so enjoyed in the history department at WFU. There I grew to love "learning for learning's sake," which, of course, is the greatest gift I can offer my students.

Dr. Hendricks~
You probably do not remember me but I took one of your United States History courses during Summer Session 2004. Although I was, what most people consider a non-traditional student, but you were such a gracious and pleasant professor and welcomed me right into your classroom. You were interested in your students and made my time in your classroom an excellent experience. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge that I gleaned from your course. I wish you a blessed, healthy and happy retirement!

Ed, congratulations on your retirement from a wonderfully successful and productive career as a WFU history professor. I have very fond memories of being a very naive and scared freshman taking one of your history courses in 1962. If fact, I believe your class was the first one I attended at WFU. You were a wonderful teacher, and I learned a great deal from you, not only about history but about student life in general. Thank you for being such a positive influence on my life and the lives of numerous other students. I look forward to following your "second" career!
