University to test emergency alert system
Text and voice messages to be sent March 4
Wake Forest will test a new emergency alert system on Tuesday, March 4, that will send text and voice messages to mobile phones of students, faculty and staff who have registered this academic year to receive such messages.
Wake Forest will be testing some of the capabilities of the new system acquired recently during the course of a comprehensive review of the University's emergency preparedness measures, including methods for communicating with the University community in the event of an emergency.
At 6 p.m. March 4, the University will conduct the test. A text message will be sent first, followed by a voice message. Only a voice message will be received by those whose mobile phones are not set up to receive text messages.
Students, staff and faculty should not reply to the text or voice messages. Originally, the University planned to request a reply, but that part of the test has been changed. The test will automatically generate data that will be evaluated by the University.
Anyone who does not receive a message is encouraged to visit the WIN site and check to see if their current mobile phone number is registered. The number can be accessed in the Personal Section of WIN, under Your Personal Information.
Students, faculty and staff will see the phone number 336-758-8911 on their telephone when they receive the test message. The University is asking students, faculty and staff to include that number in their list of contacts recorded in their mobile phone so that they may better recognize the number in the future. The University suggests that the number be identified as "WFU Emergency Alerts."
