The Time is Now!Send a message to the Orange Bowl-bound Demon Deacon football team. We will post some of your messages on this page.
Messages TO THE ACC CHAMPS (Wow, it's great to say that)- Congratulations on an incredible achievement and thank you for igniting that Deacon spirit once again. As 30 of my good friends and Sigma Pi brothers scramble to lock-in airfares, hotels and tee times, I am grateful for your superb effort that has brought the wonderul thing that is Wake Forest back into the forefront of my life. We will be in the Orange Bowl and we'll bring 23 years of memories and saved-up cheers with us! Go DEACS. Scott Fitzgerald (1983)
As the parent of a freshman, I am thrilled with the experience my son is having at Wake. He is a member of the marching band and they are just as pumped up about the Orange Bowl as the football team. Go Deacs !! Lucille D'Auria (parent) (2010)
In my 4 years at Wake we won a total of 8 games. I saw all but one of those wins. In 2006, 11 wins, that is legendary!!!! I have to admit I only saw three games but 3 wins. Liberty, Maryland and Ga Tech! I am going to be at the Orange Bowl victory too!!! Larry Fernandez (1975)
I have had two (sons) former players play for Coach Grobe .....Jason Anderson and Kenny Moore. They are better men for attending WFU and being associated with this program. My son and I make every home game we can and have really enjoyed this season. Great job, good luck and GO DEACS! BS
The first time I remember being a Wake Forest fan was when a young guard on the Wake Forest basketball team by the name of Billy Packer played. Since then I have always pulled for "My Team". There are many words to describe this year's football team, however here are a few: team players, student athlete, courageous, never gives up, proud of their university, national coach of the year, deserves to be ACC champ! Go Deacs!!!
Craig Weaver (Just a Fan)
Hey y'all did a great job!!!!! Mikesha
Congratulations Wake Forest Football on a superior job and winning the ACC Championship!! Coach Grobe your leadership and integrity are second to none! You truly make us PROUD to be a DEACON!!!! The WFU flag is flying high from our pier here in Virginia with much PRIDE! Good luck at the Orange Bowl! My wife, daughter, son and grandchildren will join me in cheering you on for the Orange Bowl Trophy! GO DEACS!!!! Robert M. Dick, II (1966)
I know I am "oh ye of little faith," but I was in marching band for four years and suffered through four losing seasons. I've followed my late grandmother's rule that if you want Wake Forest to win (she went to West Virginia), then you need to take a nap during the game. Evidently it works; I slept through the ACC Championship. It also helps I work midnights and use the weekends to catch up on sleep. Anyway, it appears Coach Grobe and the other coaches have taught each of the team an important life lesson (assuming the players already knew this)...With loads of hard work and a positive mental attitude, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. As we say in West Virginia, I'm sure Louisville will get the "swell head" as the game approaches. We won't. We'll just keep on doing what's got us here. I won't be able to watch the game; I have to train my replacement at work. But know that I'm with all of the players and coaches. Again, Congratulations on a tremendous season. John D. Seibert (1988)
Make your dreams a reality... good out there and have a blast!!! The memories you'll make will last a lifetime... I can't wait to see that Orange Bowl Trophy back at Wake Forest!!! And then the Coach of Year Trophy in Jim Grobe's office. I'm reaally proud to be a Deac!!! George D. Canavos (1984)
I have pictures with each of the following players Kenny Moore, Kevin Patterson, and Boomer Peterson. I would like to get each player a framed picture. I would also like to keep in contact from time to time with each player my email is rdeskins@triad.rr.com. Best of luck to all the players and coaches and Coach Grobe. I cannot leave out AD Ron Wellman broadcast people everyone does a wonderful Job and such great athletes and people. Roy Deskins (Forsyth Tech 1992)
Congratulations to the team and Coach Grobe. All of you have really done a great job this season and I couldn't be more proud. Thank you for the wonderful memories and best of luck in "The Orange Bowl" Go Deacs! Louise Davidson (2006 Retiree)
Just so you know....some of us were ready to haul it to Boise, Idaho, if that was the destination; but we thank you for keeping us in this time zone. We thank you for giving us the privilege to interject the letters "BCS" into conversations with perfect strangers. And we thank you for no longer having to go into detailed explanations of why we "waste money" following WF football (heard that one too many times). It probably hasn't sunk in the magnitude of what you've done for this university and its fans; but when you return in 10 years for the commemoration of the 2006 ACC Championship, maybe you'll understand why grown men (and women) were crying at the end of the GT game, and why perfect strangers want to hug you or shake your hand. This has been a fun ride, and win or lose, I'm gonna hate to see it conclude in Miami. Best of luck! Charlie Crisp (2001)
Go Deacs! Thank you Coach Grobe and your staff for such a great effort and for doing with class! Also, I think we should also be thankful for Ron Wellman for finding Coach Grobe! If the Deacon Club is the body of Wake Forest Athletics, then Paul Kennedy is the heart of it! Thank you Paul! You have believed Wake could do it for years and your enthusiasm is contagious. Go Deacs! John W. Graham (1983)
I have often told people that the '79 Wake-Auburn game was the best college football game ever played and with great sincerity and pride. That is no longer true. The 2006 ACC Championship now claims that honor. GO DEACS!!! Beat the Birds!!! Steven Trumbo (1982)
Let's get back to the best motto ever: WAKE THE NATION! Let's keep it as our permanent slogan to remember this terrific season and to honor all of our athletes and coaches. The nation is indeed taking notice of Wake Forest! Congratulations to Coach Grobe and all the guys on a wonderful season. You have put the excitement and the heart back into the game! The Ahmeds (parents '09)
Wake Forest, I can't wait to watch you guys play in Miami! The thrill of being able to call Wake Forest "my school" is beyond belief (I got my letter Tuesday). For the next four years, I'll be right behind this team (no, really, I'll be in the band), following faithfully just as I have for years. Go Deacs!!! Elizabeth Hartley (2011)
To the 2006 ACC Football Champions: Thanks so much for making this season such an incredible ride! I have never seen Groves ( or should it be Grobe's) stadium rock like it did against Boston College. I have never been so PROUD to BE a DEACON!!! Have fun and show the world what you're about in the Orange Bowl!!!!! Mike Nesser (BA 91, MA 93)
After all the ragging and dragging I have gotten from my friend at NC State about our football team...I am proud to say he finally shut up! WOW! What a remarkable bunch of young men! Not one day has passed by in my 8 years of employment here that I have not felt the same pain and agony that our football teams have felt. All the struggles and comments from other teams, fans and most of all the press. Then came Coach Grobe... What a change for our wonderful school! He came in with a vengance, telling the young men that if they wanted to win, they had to work hard. I witnessed the team at that time go through trials and tribulations during practices. Early morning workouts that brought grumbling and mumbling from the team. But over time I saw a change in them, not only physically but mentally as well. They had a coach who told them good things about themselves. A coach who truely cared about them as people. A coach who was a class act and wanted them to be the same...and he succeeded! Congratulations to each one of you. You have made the university proud! Isn't it funny to see those who doubted all year (and years past) jump on the "bandwagon" now that you have shown them what us"true fans" knew all along? Enjoy the glory!!! You earned every single second of it! ~~~GO DEACS!~~ One True Deacon Fan (Employee Since '98)
WE ARE SOOOO VERY PROUD OF OUR DEACONS ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU WILL BE PLAYING IN OUR HOME STATE OF FLORIDA! WE KNOW YOU WILL DO GREAT, AND WE WILL BE THERE TO ROUTE YOU ON ALL THE WAY!! GOOD LUCK! TYLER SMITH AND FAMILY (2009)
My son graduated from Wake Forest this year. I have enjoyed watching all Demon Deacon sports since my son entered, and like all Deac fans really enjoyed this year's football season. Bring the same qualities to the Orange Bowl that you displayed all year: play smart, play hard, play with integrity and class, and most of all - enjoy the experience. GO DEACS !!!! Frank Kotwicki (2006)
As a lifelong resident of Winston Salem and lifelong Wake Forest fan this season has been more than I could have hoped for. Thank you. Now go to Miami and prove ESPN and all the other naysayers wrong. Go Deacs!!!! Patty Bobbitt (parent of a freshman)
I have been a Deacon fan since I entered Wake in 1984. I married, Donald Johnson, a former player (#48 who played from 1981 to 1985) and we produced another Deacon fan; our daughter Amber. Amber and I lost "DJ" in 1997 but she and I continued to be die-hard fans. We have always attended the games and believed in our Deacons. She proudly wears the t-shirt that I wore as a "Deacon Darling" some 20-22 years ago. We had the pleasure of going to the championship game and joined other ardent fans in cheering our Deacs on!! We have always been and will always be proud of the character shown on and off the field. Icing on the cake is the fact that, just recently, she received her acceptance letter to Wake Forest. Now, Deacs, bring the win home from Miami!! You/we deserve it!!! Cecelia Foy-Dorsett (1988)
As a Demon Deacon lifer...this season has been a dream come true. Thanks to Mr. Grobe, possibly the classiest man I have ever met in athletics. I bleed Gold and Black, and am proud the Dimesquad of 2010 will keep the success around for more than a humble stay at the top. Stephen Edwards (2010)
This school is wonderful in so many ways...and the football team exemplifies this image. The students and players are the best of the best. They put their heart and souls into every game and used their heads wisely. Coach Grobe showed the nation what a lot of hard work can accomplish. He taught this team to believe in themselves and look what happened. He certainly deserves Coach of the Year and the team deserves to win in the Orange Bowl. Good Luck in Miami!!!! Nancy Preston (parent of 2006 grad)
What a blast! Congratuations, Wake Forest Football. I graduated in '80; my father graduated in '49, and my son will graduate in '09. What a great ride you guys have made it! Go, Deacs, Go! Kimberley Coiner Hempen (1980)
Read and repeat................... I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!! GO Deac's YOU MAKE US PROUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! S. Buccellato, Mom of 09 student (2009)
I am sooooo excited for this amazing team. I have actually watched college football this year because the Deacons were something wonderful to watch. I grew up on the campus, went to school here and now I work here. Wake Forest now is a household name and I can't wait for the game. Best holiday wishes to you and your family! AND GO DEACS!!!!!!! Beth Tedford (1985)
Good Guys do finish first! What a class act. Dan Shive (1967)
As proud parents of a former Wake Forest cheerleader (Caroline), we have always loved the Wake Forest team. But this year, your strength to work through diversity and your persistence to finish the fourth quarter has made us so very proud of you! Wake Finishes! You have won our hearts. Good luck to all of you and thank you, Coach Grobe, for the integrity that you put in the football program. Rosemary & Tom Adkisson
All of those hours of drilling on a dry field and beating myself up with a 6 foot metal pole...being accosted by opposing fans in Raleigh and the Ramblin Wreck mascot while waiting for the halftime show...losing my voice from screaming for about three hours straight and standing on the bleacher seats every Saturday in the heat or the cold in a white body suit and gold sequin mini skirt and vest...and loading on the bus as proud Marching Deacons win or lose...it was worth every minute. Those memories of loving the Deacons then make loving you all now all the more sweet. It is such an honor to cheer you on! It is an honor to be a part of the Wake Forest family with you. It is, as Mr. Abbate says with regularity, UNBELIEVABLE! Greetings to the 1988-92 Color Guard! Isn't it "Great - 2 B -A Deamon Deacon!" ? You will BEAT Louisville! Mia Brydie (1992/2001)
Do you think Ohio State, USC, Florida, or Michigan would have a forum like this so alumni and fans could express their appreciation? No, they probably would have boosters shell out hundreds of dollars for a commemorative championship pen and pencil set. Next year, when Wake Forest wins it again, let's splurge and cascade Gold and Black toilet paper on the quad. John Badgio (1982)
Thanks for helping WAKE the World about what we already know. My daughter just got admitted to Wake Forest today, and we will be joining all of you in Miami to cheer on the team and our school, along with four of my "suitemates" from the Class of 1970. Dave Hartley (1970)
This football season has been great to watch. Both my teams in Black and Gold, the Deacs and the Saints are doing well. (Who would have thunk it?!) I'm very proud. It's also been good to read some of the articles that have been published and see that you guys have been having fun along the way. I wish you guys the best, and I will definitely be somewhere decked in black and gold hollering at a TV when you play in the Orange Bowl! Courtney Anderson (1999/2000)
From all of us grads out on the sidelines to you great Deacon players: Congrats and know we are proud of you and will be cheering you on to victory in the Orange Bowl. Go DEACS!!! Ken Blanton (1973)
I remember 2001 coming to the stadium, buying a ticket for five bucks, and being able to sit anywhere. To the then new coaching staff I say thanks and congratulations. To the then freshmen, now redshirt seniors, like Willie, I say thanks and congratulations. (Incidentally, Willie, you won or saved the game in Jacksonville four times, and I can still replay each time in my mind.) What a fall semester. Annie Bersagel? Michelle Sikes? The men's soccer team? The women's field hockey team? The 30-40 times that sports announcers highlighted Wake's academics? Then this! Can't wait for Miami. Pete Stevens (dad of an '06)
......congratualtions on a great season and the bowl bid...GO DEACS! jimmy long (venice, ca)
I was raised without brothers; I attended a women's college; I went to graduate school where there was no football team; my husband graduated from Duke. Needless to say, I haven't known football. Nor did I know what a big football fan I was until this year. Now I'm an avid Wake Forest football fan. (I hope my husband doesn't read this.) My daughter loves WFU and this season has given her yet another reason to be proud. She's a screaming Deacon - I must admit I am too now. Good luck in Miami!!! Mary Schwartz (proud parent of 2009 student)
It has been years since I heard football players described as intelligent, honorable men of integrity--in fact, I'm not sure I ever have before! What a thrill it is to know that this description applies to the members of our daughters' college team! It has also been wonderful, after her being at Wake now for almost 4 years, to finally be able to find a Wake game on Atlanta television! I wish you could have heard all of us screaming you guys on to victory and hollering with relief for each yard gained---and I'm not even a football fan! Congratulations on a great season and for inspiring the whole student body to put integrity as high as winning. Best of luck in Miami! Mrs. Cobb
WAY TO GO DEMON DEACONS! I am in Alabama for law school and was so sick and tired of hearing Alabama & Auburn fans brag non-stop every time they played a game, until I had to start wearing a deacon t-shirt, sweatshirt, or cap everyday just to shut them down. I was already proud to be an alumni but you have truly put the icing on the cake! Watch out Miami, the demons are bringin' the HEAT! Mary Alexander-Oliver
I want to extend my thanks to Coach Grobe for proving that football success can be achieved in the right way. This program has been able to achieve so much while still maintaining high academic standards, and without the scandal that plagues other successful programs. We should all remember that while football victories are a cause for celebration, it is just as important to turn out good men who will one day join us as WFU alumni. To the team I want to offer my appreciation for a season like no other. I will be in Miami rooting you on. James Kenneth Butler (1978)
Congratulations on a wonderful season. Show all the people that disrespect Wake Forest Football that we are for real when we roll into Miami. Let all the doubters feel what its like to be wrong. Show everyone that Demon Deacon Football is for real. GO DEACONS!!! Allan Ducker
Congratulations on an amazing season!!! My husband, Chet ('79), and I have enjoyed being Demon Deacon fans since we were there 30 years ago but this year was one of the best. We love your "never say die" attitude - what a great example you have set. Living in MD, we especially enjoyed your win at College Park!! We are proud to be part of the Wake Forest family. We look forward to the game in Miami. GO DEACS!!!!
Lisa Shull Walker (1980)
For two years, I shot every Wake Forest home football game, standing on the sidelines next to the team, close to Jim Grobe, circling around to capture the intensity of Ovie Mughelli, or trying to snap a quick shot of hallmate Tyson Clabo's dirty, beaten uniform. But, as I watch today, and think back to the games where students marched down University Parkway with the goal post hoisted upon their shoulders, I wish I could have been there this year, not only to shoot photos, but to rush the field, to march on the highway, and to believe that Wake Forest has and will always have one of the best college football teams in the nation. Win or lose, you have left your fellow alumni and those who have moved on wanting to come back-to paint themselves in yellow and black, and yell, scream, and believe again. You've won us over all around the nation. That may be your greatest win. And with this one shot you've been given, to play on a stage never before walked upon by our school, I must say: Beat Louisville. Beat them bad. John Bruns (2003)
Make more history in the Orange Bowl Robert Forman (Parent of Wake Graduate)
Congratulations Demon Deacons on your ACC Championship!!! And best of luck at the Orange Bowl. Although, we are not from the North Carolina area or alumni, we became Deacon fans the day that Riley Skinner and John Russell became Demon Deacons. Both of these young men have the qualities of a true winner...character and class...drive and dedication...brains and brawn. We knew that Coach Grobe was much smarter than the rest of the coaches when he offered Riley a scholarship. Riley may not have been the Deacon's starter at the beginning of the season, but who can argue that he has earned that position now? He's a winner!!! Every time we see him on Sports Center or on TV, we tell everyone, "That's the quarterback on the State Championship team that Jerico played on." While watching the games, we cheer for him and John Russell. And, on January 2, 2007, we'll be cheering for the Demon Deacons to win the Orange Bowl. Great job this year gentlemen!!! The Weitzels
Y'all rock!!! Know that everyone is rooting hard for you, whether they're glued to the TV screen at home or giving themselves a headache from screaming so loud and waving black and yellow pom-poms violently in Miami. Hope you all have happy christmases and fabulous new years--and rest up! I'll see you on the 2nd so we can beat up on Louisville...they'll never know what hit them...the time is now! :) Jess Sprinkel ('07)
No offense, but when they started handing out Orange Bowl coozies at a tailgate 3 games into the season, I think we all laughed. You guys knew you had a chance, and more than that, you had what it took. Congrats on the best season ever! Chris Wozniak (2009)
You have no idea how much my life has been blessed by Wake Forest the past four years I have been a fan. I have watched as Chris Paul won game after game, award after award, I have seen our field hockey team win NCAA Championships. But, this football season has been truly magical. As a high school student, I could not attend the games, but I missed part of my homecoming watching Wake beat BC, cheered as on TV I watched the field goal block against Duke. I tend not to be emotional, but tears filled my eyes as at Byrd Stadium, in person, I saw Wake beat UMD, to go to the ACC Title game. My friends think I am crazy being an obsessed fan, but I know better! GO DEACS!!!!
Tim Nicodemus (2012 - hopefully)
Great year for a team that no one believes in, but just keeps winning. Will definitely be at the Orange Bowl along with my Terrapin wife (who has promised to represent the ACC). You guys have shown what a team effort can produce in this era of big ego's and individual stars! No doubt you have one last great effort within you to finally put all the naysayers to rest. Bring home the Championship. Jim Solomon (1968)
SAM SWANK HAS BEEN SUCH AN INSPIRATION TO SO MANY FORMER KICKERS AND WAKE FANS ALIKE. FORMER LOVETT SCHOOL (ATLANTA) KICKING STANDOUT, WILLY KJELLSTROM '98, AND I RODE BACK FROM JACKSONVILLE TOGETHER. I HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM BEAM SO PROUDLY SINCE I FIRST MET HIM AT WAKE AFTER WATCHING EACH POINT IN THE ACC TITLE GAME FLY OFF THE FOOT OF A KICKER...AND THEN SWANK WAS NAMED MVP. WILLY WAS OVER THE MOON! THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, SAM SWANK! JASON R MCENANEY (1997)
I am first a loyal Mountaineer, but with my daughter, Sarah, a 2nd yr WAKE student, and being an admirer of WFU for decades (I applied to Med school there in 1978--no luck) I have followed the Deacons since long before Tim Duncan put WFU on the tips of many American tongues. Mr. Jim Grobe, born here in West Virginia, spoke these words when asked about his coaching style; "I'm not just a football coach. I am helping young men become productive citizens." When I learned his football team has a 96% graduation rate, my entire soul swelled with admiration, for he is behaving like no other football coach I have ever known. He is not giving lip service to the Alumni. He is leading by wonderful example, teaching many young men much more than football excellence. He makes me ever more proud to be a Mountaineer. He is one of our best exports, a Deacon in the game of life! And with Louisville ending my Mountaineers hopes of a BCS bowl bid, nothing would be more satisfying, I mean NOTHING, than to have Jim Grobe's team "demonize" those Cardinals. I hope he knows the entire State of West Virginia will be watching and pulling for WFU at the Orange Bowl.
Mark White, MD
WOW! This team has already won more games in my daughter's freshman year than the football team won during my entire 4-year stay! What a change from Steely Dan's "Deacon Blues" wafting over an empty quad to AC-DC's "Back in Black!" and a TP snowstorm. I love it. Kick butt and take names in Miami. Our clan will be there to see you make history! Bill Miller ('79 & parent 2010)
Watching all those past seasons makes this season that much more sweet. Thanks guys! Brian Stevens
GO DEACS!! Proud to be a Deacon. Best of luck in the Orange Bowl. We were at the ACC Championship and will be at the Orange Bowl with you. R.O.S.C.O. (1965 BS, 1970 MD)
nguonho Sorry just testing somt'n out uogyo
It's a pleasure watching you guys. You are a team and very much like a cast! It's a pleasure to have you in class too. I'm very glad and very proud that Wake places such an emphasis on scholar-applicants. (Which costumes are you planning to wear on Jan 2?) JERF (1981)
I was fortunate enough to watch the Deacons clinch a spot in the ACC championship game against the University of Maryland. During pre-game warm-ups and introductions, I noticed that this Wake Forest football team possessed something that I have yet to see in any football team prior - a winning attitude. It was clear from the demeanor of the players that they trusted each others' ability, and expected to excellence. I have been truly impressed by this team throughout the year for exhibiting such an attitude time and again. What is more impressive is that the team has done so with utmost class and respect for the other team and the game. I look forward to watching the upcoming Orange Bowl because I know that the team will represent Wake Forest in the only way appropriate - by expecting excellence, and delivering. Best of luck. GSC (2004)
You guys are awesome. We are so proud of you and what you've accomplished. One more - just one more. No matter the outcome know how much you are loved. Willie Idelette - love you "son #2." Joanne - Staff - ECN Department
You guys made me proud to be a deacon! Thank you and good luck in miami Randy (2010)
Living in DeLand, Florida it had been hard being the only Deacon Fan in the area (Except for #5's grandparents, great people). I was there in '03 for the 48-24 loss @ FSU. I was there at the 30-0 stomping this year. I was there for the ACC Championship game. Now nobody asks me, "Who's Wake Forest?" So thanks guys, for doing the Wake Forest community proud . . . no matter where we are. Joe O'Brien
As an alum, my life is now complete. Go Deacs.
Lloyd Nault ('76, JD '78)
Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that this would happen my first semester in college. Being from Winston Salem means I've followed Wake Forest football through all of its ups and downs over the years. I finally get to Wake and am lucky enough to be able to participate in the best football season in the history of the university. Good luck Deacons, and thanks for a wild ride! James Bobbitt (2010)
My 6-year-old was placed on "permanent code yellow" today in kindergarden during PE for tackling not one, but two, of his classmates like "NUMBER 5" does (thanks John) at St. Pius X. I couldn't have been prouder.... I wanted all of you know just how deeply inspiring your actions both on and off the field have been this year. GO DEACS! Dr. Ed Booth (1977)
I just want to say that going into college this summer I was NOT a sports person. I had never been to anything other than a high school football game before. But after this season, and the great job you guys have done, I'm becoming addicted! It was great to come to Wake Forest for this season and just be swept away with all the victories (and tp-ing!). This team has shown me why people enjoy sports, because when people play with respect and no regrets, great things can happen. I have been completely amazed at how much my friends and I enjoy rooting for a team that we see in class and around campus. It is a great experience, and it makes Wake Forest even better (as if that was possible ahha)! I am now officially a Deacon fan for life, and I will certainly never forget my first semester! Good luck in Miami...and just know that even those of us who can not make it to the game will be cheering in front of TVs nationwide! Kate Brogan ('10)
I will never forget seeing Jim Grobe's on-field interview after the Duke game. When asked about the blocked field goal, he said we may look back at that as a defining moment of the season. Congratulations on that moment being only one of MANY. I have faith that Miami is going to produce many more! Not just the campus, but the Wake Forest community is behind you. Good luck!
Ben (2007)
Guys, You've made us all prouder than ever to be Demon Deacons! Congratulations on a season none of us will ever forget. Now bring this last one home and become Orange Bowl champions! DeaconLegion
Congratulations, guys, on a great season! And thanks for proving me right and the ESPN idiots wrong. I went on a personal rant against them starting in October and even e-mailed them concerning their lack of coverage of our great team. Teamwork got you where you are today and teamwork will get you a great victory in Miami. Crush the Cardinals! GO DEACS!! Jane Gibson, a PROUD WFU Mom
Watching you guys celebrate down in Jacksonville, I know that I have never been more proud of a team in my life. You guys have been through so much, and shown so much heart. It's what Wake Forest is all about. It's time for folks to stop seeing you guys as "the Little School that Could," and pay attention to "the Good Football Team that is!" Good luck down south, and GO DEACS! Mitchell Currin (2007)
Congratulations to all of you!! What a fun, exciting season this has been. I was sitting on the very edge of the couch the entire 4th quarter and standing for the last minute. Continue to do "the plan" when you get to Miami. Karen Anderson, (staff & MALS '02)
To our Wake Forest football team - you have indeed shown the nation that it is possible to be smart, to have class and integrity, and still be winners on the football field. Congrats on a fantastic year! It was a fun time in Jacksonville and it will be an even better time in Miami. You deserve all of the accolades you have gotten. And to COACH GROBE - thank you for being one class act, along with being a fantastic coach. We love you all! GO DEACS - BEAT LOUISVILLE!! Debbie Dent Klutz ('75)
Congratulations to Coach Grobe and the team! I am originally from Tallahassee, and thus have experienced the jeers from my hometown friends with regards to football. This year we showed them, though... a 30-0 shut-out at Doak Campbell! One of the many exciting triumphs that this team has accomplished. I am so proud of all of you, and cannot wait to cheer you on in the Orange Bowl! GO DEACS :) Meredith Brown (2006)
Wow! Your hard work and persistence has given so many even more WFU pride! Thanks to you, our freshman band member has had the ultimate first semester of college! We loved you in Jacksonville and we'll love you in Miami! Congratulations and best wishes for the Orange Bowl! Lynn Keller, parent (2010)
To the Champions: Thank you for making this an unforgetable football season. I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am to be a Wake Forest alum. As a Raleigh native, I have heard plenty about State, Carolina, and Duke. You have accomplished far more this football season than any of those three have in decades. In addition, I'd like to thank the entire program for not just winning, but winning with class! See you in Dolphin Stadium, Go Deacs! Phillip Simson ('04)
Willie -- We met you freshman year when your dorm room was down the hall from our son Brian. We have been following you ever since. Congratulations on your wonderful college career. Way to go!! Diane & Art Jessen (Brian's parents '06)
Never before have I been a fan of college football (or football in general!) but you ALL have changed that. My entire family is now a bunch of Demon Deacon Football junkies!! Your team isn't just about football, it's about living life the right and honorable way. My father has been dying slowly for the past eight months and it has been sad for him not to have been a part of his grandson's high school graduation and his arrival at Wake Forest as a freshman this fall. Your incredible season provided a path for the two of them to communicate and share. With each game and the build up to it, my son e-mails his grandfather (my step-mom reads the e-mails to him) about the team and what's going on. On game day, the TV is put on so my Dad can watch the game and root with my son "in spirit." My sister printed out pictures of the Quad wrapped in white and showed them to my Dad who gave what is rare these days, a chuckle and a smile! So thank you all, for giving to all of us, that which came so naturally to you as a team. "It's not about winning or losing, but how you play the game" although WINNING HAS BEEN GREAT!! Good luck in Miami!!
Elise Lauinger (Current Parent)
Who would have believed it. I have been a huge Wake Forest fan since my freshman year in the fall of 1976. I suffered through 5-6, 1-10, 1-10 and then 8-4 with a trip to the Tangerine Bowl my senior year. I always thought the Wake-Auburn game in 1979 was the best football game I had ever seen, but the 9-6 win over Ga. Tech last week in the ACC Championship has surpassed it. I attended 9 out of 13 games this season (including the Maryland and Ga. Tech games) and my entire family - 7 of us - are headed to the Orange Bowl. This team and coaching staff are an inspiration to all sports fans, not just Wake Forest fans. You have re-energized my belief in college athletics that the good guys can actually come out on top with hard work and dedication - playing as a team. Thank you for a great season and many fond memories. Louisville better be ready to strap on the headgear because the Deacons are coming to Miami. Go DEACS!
John J. "Jody" Carpenter ('80, JD '84)
I am so bruised from continually pinching myself. What an incredible year. I was at Wake Forest in 1970 when we won the ACC Championship. That was great, but this is soooooo much better. When the ACC expanded, I remember thinking, "What is Wake Forest thinking? How will we ever win another football game?" Oh me of little faith. I didn't realize how much better it would feel to win over a field of 12! Go Deacs. You guys have heart, guts, spirit and team. You make us so proud. Godspeed in Miami! Henry Koether (1971)
I have always been "Proud To Be A Deacon" for the 40-plus years that I have been a fan. I have never been prouder to be associated with Wake Forest than I have this year. All of our athletic teams embody the many great things about Wake Forest. I am so proud of our football coaches, staff and team. I was in Jacksonville last Saturday and will be at the Orange Bowl on January 2. As I stood at the game last Saturday and watched not only our players and fans, but also the Georgia Tech players and fans, hold up 5 fingers at the beginning of the 4th quarter, I knew we were going to win something bigger than a football game. That moment and at the end of the game as I looked up and saw the final score will be something I will cherish for the rest of my life! Go Deacs!
Steve Stewart (1973)
The complete jubilation I felt as the clock expired on Saturday along with the tears cried by myself and others around me just shows how much your season has meant to the WFU family. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and for being the epitome of the student-athlete. Congratulations! PS. Sam Swank is unbelievable! deacdixieboy (2008)
Quality brains, quality hearts, quality souls- that's Wake Forest! With top-notch faculty, staff, student body and campus, 11 teams nationally ranked (oh, did I mention quality athletes?), the Orange Bowl is icing on the cake! Boy, did our son nail it when he applied first choice, Early Decision. See you in Miami. Go, Deacs. Go, Dodge! Parents of Roger Erra (2008)
Congratulations on a very successful season. Thank you for the great memories. Let's win one more in Miami! Go Deacs! George Theuri ('97)
Congratulations to a fine group of young men. It has been such fun following the games this football season. What an inspiration it has been to watch a group of young men play each week with such character and class. You have been a wonderful example to the nation and inspired millions as you have played each week with honesty, hard work and above all integrity to lead your team and all WAKE fans to this wonderful championship. I was in Jacksonville and will be in Miami with a group of Wake Forest parents to cheer you on once again. GO DEACS and thanks for the way you have represented your school-----this will be long remembered after this football season is over. Ann Phillips (Parent 2006)
I am a fan of several universities and have a hat from them to show support, raised in Omaha, Nebraska i follow Big Red football, but was so impressed with Wake Forest when they played a couple of years ago that i bought three HATS!!! I wear my hats proudly and have cheered for the Demon Deacons all season...Great season and Good Luck in the Orange Bowl!!!!! Bob Schmidt
This is my last semester at Wake Forest and it couldn't have been finer!!!! Thanks Coach and all the players who did such an outstanding job all season long. I keep telling everyone how special Wake Forest is and now the nation is beginning to see why. A cold, wet day in January and a defensive football game made for one of the best days of my life! EBY (2006)
Congratulations to all of you - the players, coaches, Ron Wellman, Jim Grobe, the staff (school and athletic) and the student body. You have all exemplified great sportmanship and school spirit this year. Wake Forest has often been told you are too small to succeed, the academics are too stringent to have good athletes, no great coach would want to work at Wake Forest, the fan base is not large enough to support a strong D1 program, and more. And, you have proved them all wrong! Congratulations and great job to all of you! Win the Orange Bowl!! DaddyDeac15 (Parent '10)
Congratulations! What class, determination, intelligence and grace! You have made us all proud to be members of the Wake Forest family. Finish it off and beat those dirty birds from Louisville!!!!! Lisa Duzyk (mom of 2010)
As a former football equipment manager for the Deacs, I am so very excited for this team--the players, coaches, and all the staff involved in this year's well-deserved successes. It has been awesome to watch the season unfold and to celebrate what Wake Forest athletics is all about. Congrats on a job well done!
Ronda Bryant (1996)

you don't have to know much about classical music to enjoy a great concert by a first class orchestra playing great music with excitement, energy, and talent. you don't have to know much about football to enjoy a great game played by talented, determined players. this football season has brought our campus together with a fresh and renewed sense of community. thank you! the city of winston-salem, the state of north carolina, and fans around the nation are also enthused about the success of this sensational group of young men -- our hope and confidence go with you to the orange bowl! our happy thanks to coach grobe and his amazing staff. go deacs!!!
lillian britt shelton ('06 MALS)
I've just been accepted into Wake Forest this month, but I'm already one of the biggest fans around! I'm so proud of the Deacs, hurdling over the doubts of outside college football "experts." I know you'll play great - bring home that Orange Bowl title. Good luck, I'll be rooting you home!
Kyle Rate (Incoming)
CONGRATULATIONS to Coach Grobe, the coaching staff, the outstanding team leaders and the balance of this year's team!!! You are to be commended not only for an 11-0 record and all the other firsts, but for being outstanding young men whose strong character has shown on and off the field!! Your collective hard work and faith and trust in one another has made all of us alumni proud of you, and to wear the Black and Gold. We are most appreciative of your determined "spirit" that got the job done week after week "against all odds" ... THANK YOU!!! Mutter D. Evans ('75)
We've been through the ups and the downs with the program through all the years, and I am excited to see that it is finally your turn to become the champion. Good luck and let's beat Louisville in the Orange Bowl--all the fans will be watching and cheering for you. Ronna Chan ('00)
Congratulations for the excellent season you have! No matter what's going to happen in the Orange Bowl, you have played with heart all year long. I'm a fan from Mexico city and I followed your games because I have a friend working with me who was a WFU student and I can tell you he's one of the biggest fans I ever met (Chris Muhllhausen). He told me all the history that WFU have in basketball (Duncan, Howard, etc.) and the great rivals that you have in Duke University. I followed the soccer team too, that lost in overtime against Santa Barbara, but they made a great effort too. Well, you have a new fan here in Mexico and certainly Chris and I will try to make it to Miami to be part of history on January 2, 2007! Congratulations again! Guillermo Hasbach Melchor
I have watched you all season, since mikie started at wake ... You are the best!!!! Good luck at the the bowl! Mary Ann Chapman
As a member of the 1970 ACC football champs, I congratulate you on your ACC championship of 2006!! What you have accomplished is a tremendous feat and something that nobody gave you a chance to accomplish. Reminds me very much of our team of 1970 ... Just a bunch of guys that loved the game and respected each other. Please cherish the moment ... You will never forget what you went thru to get where you are today ... Cherish the ring!! Nobody can ever take from you what you have done and you will always be remembered as the ACC champs of 06!! Congrats from the first ACC champs at Wake!! We are all very proud of you--continued success in Miami!!! Vince Nedimyer ('71)
Orange is the fruit of Bowl and Post Season. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sautee it. Dey's uh, orange-kabobs, orange creole, orange gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple oranges, lemon oranges, coconut oranges, pepper orange, orange soup, orange stew, oranges salad, oranges and potatoes, orange burger, orange sandwich. That--that's about it. Run Deacons Run. RWW ('05)
Good luck and thanks for so many wonderful memories from this 2006 season! Karen Burke (Parent '05)
While I'm only 2, every night I say a special prayer for you... Oh angel of God my guardian dear to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light to guard to rule & guide. God bless the Deamon Deacons! The spirit of 5 is always ALIVE!!! Madison Molinaro (2022)
The Wake Forest alumni of South Florida welcome you and are proud that you are ambassadors for Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl. Go Deacs! Beat the Cardinals! Wake the nation! David Bates ('84)
Thanks for making this Senior Year the greatest!!! I knew you boys were capable of something special! Good Luck and just have a blast knowing you have proved everyone wrong and that Wake Forest is a team to take seriously!! Tina Maher ('07)
Congratulations to the finest group of young men to ever play the game. You have excited us, thrilled us, but most importantly, you have made us proud that smart, good guys can finish first. You have been an inspiration to the entire Wake Forest community. You have brought priceless positive publicity to this fabulous school. You are pure class. Thank you for taking all of us on this incredible ride. Susan Sullivan ('71)
I just wanted to congratulate the 2006-07 Demon Deacon football team for their classy and inspirational play this season. I was in Jacksonville cheering on the Deacs, and all I can say is that you worked hard, played as a team, and earned what you deserved... the 2nd ever ACC championship in football for WFU and the greatest bowl game ever for our school. You played football the right way, represented our university and conference in the right way, and you have earned the respect of millions around the country. Adam Muhib ('08)
You are all such remarkable ambassadors for our school. You are winners on and off the field. Thanks for making us all proud and I look forward to celebrating with you in Miami! David Slade ('98)
I couldn't be prouder of you guys. Easily my favorite team I've ever supported. I had some "lofty" expectations going into this season. Lofty for the Little Ol' Wake Forest of yesteryear at least. And you guys blew those out of the water. I've been a Wake Forest fan since moving to Winston in 3rd grade, 1989. And once I stepped foot on campus I fell in love with the place. So having lived through some pretty tough years made this one that much sweeter. Y'all didn't listen to all the so called "experts" and just went out and got the job done. Week in. Week out. Pure domination. You overcame the obstacles of injuries and never flinched. You just pulled together and played even harder as a team. And I'm not ashamed to say that when that clock read 0:00 in Jacksonville that tears starting pouring down my cheeks. There has never been a sweeter moment in my life than watching you guys run around as the happiest group of men I've seen. You earned it. Now, go get yourselves one more win in Miami. And prove those "experts" wrong again. GO DEACS! Paul Kennedy ('03)
I almost didn't write this because I'm certain that you will have hundreds of other people writing very similar things, but I eventually decided that I needed to write it, more for my sake than yours. You, as members of the football team and the Wake Forest family, have no idea what your hard work has meant for the rest of us this season. Yes, we would've supported the team if we had only won 2 games. But it is absolutely inspiring to see a team play the game the way it should be played, with players that a school can be proud of. Each of you is an example to the rest of the nation that a championship football season can be achieved with good, hard-working, intelligent, and honorable men on the field. You have given anyone with any attachment to Wake Forest something to be very proud of, and I know that you will cherish the Miami experience, not just for yourselves, but for the generations of Deacon fans that have come before that have waited their whole lives for what you men have achieved. Anderson ('06)
Congrats guys! Wonderful job. I traveled to Maryland and J'ville to see you take care of business. It's been fun flying under the radar and dellivering the big ones right on target. I'm a 3rd generation Wake alum and can't recall a more outstanding memory in all of that time. You are truly special in a lot of ways. We're all very proud of you and look forward to yet another road win in Miami! May God bless you every one!
Jim Howell ('70)
I wanted to thank you (each and every one of you) for making this such an amazing football season. It has been so fun! I currently live in Nashville, TN but have faithfully followed the season from afar. I have watched games on TV at home, in the airport in Atlanta on my way to a business trip, and in a Denver hotel during another business trip! The entire month of November I lived and died with every snap (and my co-workers will confirm this statement). Having the Deacs on National TV every Saturday night for the month was amazing! I hope that you have enjoyed being a part of this special team as much as I have enjoyed being a fan! I did want to share one special moment with you. My husband and I are currently expecting a baby that is due in May 2007. During the ACC championship game last Saturday, we were watching the game with fellow members of the Wake Forest Alumni Association in Nashville. All was fairly quiet in the bar during the second half and then Riley Swanson intercepted Reggie Ball... Everyone there started screaming, cheering, and going absolutely crazy; at that moment, I felt the baby move for the first time! I know, no matter what, this child will be a Deacon fan! I relayed this story a couple of days later to some of friends and they asked about my excitement at the time over feeling the baby. My honest reply was that, at the moment, I was more excited about the interception! It took a little while for the baby moving to sink in! But, I will always remember the ACC Championship win with my pregnancy. Best of luck on January 2 in the Orange Bowl! Know that you will have Deacons everywhere cheering you on. Ginger Lohr Milne ('97)
To the 2006-2007 Wake Forest Football Team, THANK YOU for the following: - Giving 110% for the entire year - Overcoming adversity and believing in yourself - The national exposure to Wake Forest and all it has to offer - Bringing Deacon Nation closer than its been in years and............... - The best $750 credit card bill I will ever receive John W. Cross ('04)
You all have rocked my world! I will be there screaming my voice hoarse on Jan. 2!! Help us put the Quad in 2 feet of toliet paper! GO DEACS! Cameron Smith ('09)
Congrats guys!! You represent this University so well, on and off the field. See you in Miami!! Thomas Bissette ('94)
Hey guys, congratulations on this remarkable season. At the beginning of the season, I was hoping for 8 wins. This has surpassed anything I could have ever dreamed of. I hope you stick it to Louisville in the Orange Bowl and shut down their high-powered offense. This fall has been very special, and I will never forget it. Thank you so much for giving me the chance to see an ACC Championship and January bowl game before I die. I love you guys. GO DEACS! Rob Jenkins ('10)
So very proud of each and everyone of you! To be a part of this great football family is such an honor. The whole program is top-notch and that would not be possible if you weren't such a talented and outstanding group of guys! Though we missed seeing your ACC Championship game in person, you can believe we will not miss your last victory of the season! We are looking forward to seeing each of you, your families, coaches, their families and Wake Forest fans from everywhere, in Miami. Forever Family and GO DEACS! Mom & Dad Peterson
Go out there and win this game. Win it for Brian Piccolo; Russ Brantley; Bill Starling; the Moosebruggers; Randy the Deacon Nut; Marjorie Crisp; Doc Murphrey; Skeeter Francis; Henry Groves; Ricky Proehl; Ed Christman; Ed Wilson; all the Wake Forest players who came before you; all your friends and family; all your fans and supporters; but most of all- win this for yourself and your teammates. Wear that uniform with pride and continue to represent with pride, respect and passion. Jason Grimes ('94)
Congratulations on a great season. Bob Hebert (Staff)
Congrats to the Wake Forest foobtall Deacons! You have represented your University this year both on the field and off. I could not be more proud to be a Demon Deacon and your achievements this season have made my year! Go Deacs! 2006 ACC Champions!!! Stephen Phillips ('00)
Congrats boys! Do me proud in Miami KP and RICH! Stowe Nelson ('08)
Way to go guys! I am very proud to be a Deacon! Rick Decker ('68)
You guys have done us all proud. GO DEACS! Danny (MALS '07)
The torch has been passed to you from the 1970 ACC Championship team. You're the men who made other men cry tears of joy. Grown men of many years actually cried in the stands at Jacksonville and some who can't travel anymore cried at home after witnessing that great finish on TV. To win it all this season you played without your starting QB and RB, and still won. You played with two ALL ACC DBs hurt and struggling just to play, and still, you won. You showed the ACC and the nation the fighting spirit of the Demon Deacon! The Demon Deacon's fight is not yet over. For this GREAT TEAM, THE TIME IS NOW to win one last game in the Orange Bowl and become the greatest team ever to play at Wake Forest University.
Garry Whitaker ('80, JD '83)
Congrats to our coaches and players—not just for a terrific season. It's gratifying to see the team get the wins they've been so close to in the past, and even better to see the way in which our players and coaches conduct themselves on and off the field. We know how hard all of you have worked to get to this point and we're very, very proud of what you've accomplished. Thank you for a great season. We'll see you in Miami! Go Deacs, Beat Louisville! Pete Hines ('91)
As a Deacon fan since birth, this season has been very special, but for more reasons than the 11 wins, ACC Championship and a trip to the Orange Bowl. As a high school coach for over twenty years, your character, class and never-give-up attitude have truly been an inspiration. I will use you as an example for my teams as long as I coach. Logan Freeman
Great season, guys. I was around for the championship in 1970 and achieving this one was a much greater thrill. You guys play with heart and head in an amazing way and have been a great joy to watch. Thanks to all of you for a wonderful, enchanted season. Now, go get the Cardinals in the Orange Bowl! Joel Miller
As Wil Smith would say "Welcome to Miami." Tremendous job in Jacksonville and throughout the year! You represent us so well!! Get after those Louisville Cardinals and bring yourselves back an Orange Bowl Trophy!!! Andy aka deacfreke2
Play loose, have fun and be proud to be a demon. Greatness will carry with you always. George
GIT R DONE!!!! Larry the Cable Guy
I attended Wake through some "dry" years but have nonetheless been a huge fan for many, many years. You guys have definitely made the Wake Forest family proud! And the incredible thing is, your class and character mean as much and are as impressive as your W-L record. Thank you! Enjoy and savor every single minute of this magical season. You certainly deserve it. Congratulations, and GO DEACS! Beat Louisville! We're all behind you!
Beth Sparks ('76, MA '78)
Congratulations! Thank you for raising awareness for organ donation. My son too,was an organ donor. GO DEACS

Hey Deacs!...I just want to say thank you for making my senior year one of the best experiences of my life...We've always had faith in you guys and Coach Grobe and the rest of the coaching staff, but the breaks just didn't fall our way....this year you guys made it happen...and it has been AMAZING!....there are no words to describe the sheer joy that my friends and I in the student section felt when Willie ran for the first down to seal the victory.....I don't know a single other school where the students and football team share such a great relationship....we love watching you guys play, and we really never want this season to end!.....Congratulations for going down in history as not only the best team in Wake Forest history, but the best team in the ACC for the entire year of 2006!....You guys deserve every accolade, and every ounce of respect that any college footbal fan has.....Thank you so much for making us so happy.....we love you guys, and cannot wait to see you bring home the Orange Bowl trophy!....GOOD LUCK, and GOD BLESS!!! GO DEACS!!! Blake McIntosh
2006 ACC Champions, Thank You! My family has been season ticket holders since 1991 and we have never had as much fun at Wake Forest games as we did this year! Never before have I high-fived so many strangers in my life! This team was extremely exciting to watch! There are so many names I will never forget... Riley Skinner, Jon Abbate, De'Angelo Bryant, Aaron Curry, Josh Gattis, Patrick Ghee, Willie Idlette, Kevin Marion, Kenny Moore, Nate Morton, Kevin Patterson, Boo Robinson, Alphonso Smith, Sam Swank, Riley Swanson, Chip Vaughn, Jim Grobe, Steed Lobotzke, Ray McCartney, Dean Hood, and so many more. Thanks you all so much and see you in Miami! Chris Goodrich
Congratulations on a fantastic and inspiring season. See you in Miami in a few weeks! James McClellan
I'll admit it: tears ran down my face as I stood in the Jacksonville bleachers looking up to the clock which read 0:00. I wasn't just proud of my classmates as they won the school's second ever ACC Championship. I looked around and just couldn't believe how many Wake Forest fans made the trip down. We sent three times the amount of kids in our student body, a feat that no school could ever boast. I saw a student who traveled across the world for a chance to see this game. I saw a team full of kids who everyone underestimated. I saw thousands of fans hold up 5 fingers to pay tribute to members of OUR family. This was the greatest trip of my life, and I'm not afraid to say it brought tears of joy to my eyes. I will be there in Miami come January 2, and I want to thank you all for representing our university in the best possible way. I will never forget this moment for the rest of my life. Wake20
