New and improved

Online registration for Fall 2005 should be faster and easier, thanks to Banner software program.

The next spoke in the Program Link wheel is going live with the start of Fall 2005 registration this week. Faster class searches and entries, more flexibility for administrative assistants, and centralized student records highlight the Student module of the Sunguard SCT Banner software suite.

"The Registrar's office is like the hub of a wheel," says Dot Sugden, University Registrar. "We are constantly receiving student information and dispersing information to other campus offices. We have been looking forward to a good, reliable system to support us for many years."

The conversion to Banner included hours of training for registrar staffs from the undergraduate, graduate and professional schools, and invaluable feedback sessions with students. Lena Benson, a junior from Greenville, South Carolina, participated in the undergraduate registration focus group in early March. "The new system is definitely an improvement because students can find what they're looking for much faster," says Benson. "You can search for classes on a specific day, search for a specific teacher, or certain credit hours. If you're in a position where you're looking for a class at the last minute, it makes it easier."

Second-year students in the full-time MBA program will be using Banner to register themselves online for the first time. The Babcock Graduate School of Management registrar's office staff will assist them in the process. "We're happy that our students will now be participating in the online registration process," says Dianne Luce, registrar.

Juniors and seniors started registration in their major and minor fields March 21. In most departments, the administrative coordinator enters class selections for the upperclassmen in that department. Teresa Hill, administrative coordinator in the psychology department since 1984, will help register students starting today. She first came to Wake Forest in 1982 and worked in the registrar's office for two years, when registration was done by hand using key- punch cards.

"I think I'm going to like this registration process a lot better," says Hill. "With Banner you can put everything in at once. It's much faster and I definitely like that." Like other administrative coordinators, Hill participated in training during the summer of 2004 and is now a troubleshooter for colleagues learning the new process. She says working together with others helped her learn the system more quickly.

Underclassmen and Graduate School students begin open registration April 4. Babcock students register on April 6. With the new system, registration will continue to take place through WIN, but students will follow a new link, "Fall 2005 Registration" to begin the process. Program Link is sponsoring a Fall 2005 registration kickoff in the Green Room April 4-7 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Staff from the Registrar's Office and the Information Systems department will be on hand to answer questions. For a new registration checklist, visit techtalk.wfu.edu.
