A new heart
"Dr. Kon made me a new heart!" said Dunn, who is visiting professor at the Divinity School. "It's nothing short of miraculous." Dunn remained in the hospital for much of April. Although home for a short while, he soon returned with a bout of pneumonia, "the kind you can only contract in the hospital," he said. He is continuing his recovery at home this summer. Given the remaking of his physical heart, Dunn has shown 'great heart' in the face of one of the biggest challenges of his life. Demonstrating a willingness and resolve to do whatever it takes to recover good health, Dunn has withstood weeks of regular doctors' appointments and strict medical regimens. Countless phone calls, cards and well-wishes have flooded his home and office, reflecting the love, respect and affirmation for this religious freedom fighter and churchman. "The outpouring of love and support has just been overwhelming," he said. Now, with measured steps to his walk and that strong, familiar tone of voice returning, he is making the comeback complete with his social and political savvy and his notable bow-tie-wearing dapper appearance. His courageous ambition to return to the classroom in the fall is a welcome sign to the faculty, staff and students of the Divinity School. -- By J. Andrew Daugherty (MDiv '03) |
