Retiring faculty honored
eteran faculty members from both campuses who are retiring were recognized at Commencement May 20.
Retirees from the Reynolda Campus include:
Leon Corbett (59, JD 61), senior University counsel and professor of law. Corbett joined the law school faculty in 1968 and was acting dean of the school in 1978-79 and associate dean from 1979-84. He was named University counsel and vice president in 1987. He has served as secretary to the Board of Trustees since 1983.
Nancy Cotton, professor and former chair of the English department, joined the faculty in 1977. She also served as acting dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and 1990-91 and as the first director of the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program from 1986 to 1994.
David S. Weaver, professor and former chair of anthropology, joined the faculty in 1977;
Dudley Shapere, Reynolds Professor of the Philosophy and History of Science, joined the faculty in 1984.
Also retiring are political science professors Jack Fleer and Dick Sears, who joined the faculty in 1964.
Retiring from the Bowman Gray campus are:
Eugene W. Adcock III, professor of pediatrics;
M. Robert Cooper, professor of internal medicine-hematology and oncology;
Robert L. Michielutte, professor of family and community medicine;
Pentti M. Rautaharju, professor of public health sciences;
Thomas E. Sumner, professor of radiology and pediatrics;
James N. Thompson, former dean of the medical school and professor of surgical sciences-otolaryngology;
Nat E. Watson Jr., associate professor of radiology; and
Ivo van de Rijn, professor of microbiology and immunology.
