Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why should I take a course in Women's and Gender Studies?

Courses offered through Women's and Gender Studies will allow you to learn about the world in which you live and work. Students attest to the fact that Women’s and Gender Studies classes are about intellectual and personal growth. Recognizing that gender is a factor in all enterprises affecting our culture, the faculty guide students as they explore such issues as women’s health and reproduction, masculinities, feminist political thought, fathers and daughters, bodies, sexualities and identities, economic and social inequalities, historical constructions of femininity and masculinity, gay and lesbian film studies, the intersection of gender, ethnicity and class, the body, women’s art and literature, international women’s movements, etc. The program offers students not only knowledge, but also an approach, a critical framework through which to view and construct new knowledge.

2. What do students say about Women's and Gender Studies' classes and the faculty?

“ I just can’t say enough about the effect this course had on me. I’ve never been so pushed, confused, emotional, or intrigued by a class in my life. [The professors were] amazing—extremely knowledgeable but still didn’t lead class to a certain conclusion—guided us through different concepts and topics and allowed us to explore our own reality.”

“ The readings were extremely interesting, relevant, and thought-provoking...The professors made our classroom an extremely tolerant and respectful setting.”

“ [The Professors] were wonderful. They were intellectually stimulating and emotionally supportive. I thoroughly enjoyed the class.” “I loved the discussion format. I learned so much that way and felt free to express my ideas.” “The projects were a great way to wrap everything up and I gathered knowledge from so many areas for it.”

One student e-mailed the following message to her professors: “I was writing to tell you how much I enjoyed our class this spring. It changed the way I feel about myself and about my world. I’m just so proud of the work and growth that I continue to go through to understand myself. Thank you so much for everything. I don’t think the class could have been guided any better.”

3. Can I get Women's and Gender Studies credit for courses I take overseas or at another American university?

  1. Before you go abroad or enroll in a course from another institution, check with International Studies to make certain that the institution is properly accredited. Also, pick up a transfer credit or study abroad form from the Registrar.
  2. Attach an official course description for the course, as well as a syllabus for the specific offering you wish to take.
  3. Bring the completed form and course description to the Women’s and Gender Studies office, A106A Tribble Hall, between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, so that the director can make certain that the course meets the program’s requirements in terms of content and academic rigor.
  4. A member of the Women’s and Gender Studies staff will contact you. If the course has been approved, return the form to the Registrar.
