Sports

Encyclopedia of Women and Sport in America
Ref GV709 E53 1998
This book covers the history of women and sports in the United States. The entries are primarily women but there are also sections about particular sports, laws like Title IX and more. The entries tend to be fairly brief and only a few have lists for more resources, however, it is an interesting place to begin research either by providing general background or simply flipping through to find an interesting research topic.

Encyclopedia of Women and Sports
Ref GV709 S44 1996
This is an encyclopedia covering women who have played a key role in athletics. There are also a few entries on specific sports or activities as well, but the focus is on individual women. The entries tend to be pretty brief with short, if any, additional resource listings.

International Encyclopedia of Women and Sports
Ref GV709 I58 2001
This is a wonderful resource. It is a three volume book pertaining to everything related to women and sports on the international level. While the scope is tremendously large, the entries are still long and detailed often also containing pictures and extensive bibliographies for further research.

Women’s Sports Encyclopedia
Ref GV709 W589 1997
This is also an encyclopedia about women and sports, however, it breaks it down by sport rather then simply alphabetical listings of everything all together. This is a very helpful format since rather then having to know exact women, you can look it up by sport and find all the relevant women as well as history of the sports, bibliographies, major events, and biographies of the key women. I thought this was a much more helpful resource because of this layout.

Database

Contemporary Women’s Issues
This database covers women’s issues from 1992 to current with the option for the article in full text. It covers a variety of disciplines and pulls from 190 different countries. When you search you can do a basic keyword or author search but can also search by topic (i.e. abortion, welfare, etc) or by geographic region (i.e. Afghanistan). It was really simple to use and offered a proliferation of good articles.

SPORT Discus
Citations and some abstracts from periodicals, books, conference proceedings, dissertations and theses, research papers, etc. SPORTDiscus covers the areas of: sport, physical fitness, sport science and recreation.
