This is an encyclopedia that addresses all the issues of gays and lesbians internationally. Entries include lesbian/gay individuals and also historical studies of gay and lesbian subcultures. It also includes reading lists for further study about the topics.

Gay & Lesbian Online
Ref HQ76.25 D37 2000
This is a resource that maps gay and lesbian resources online. It is divided into chapters based on themes or concepts and then the chapter provides websites, chat rooms, and other online resources relevant to that topic. There is a huge range and seemingly everything is covered from activism to the International Gay Rodeo Association. There is also commentary and reviews about each of the topics and websites so you have a sense of what to expect when you log on.

Gay and Lesbian Rights: A Reference Handbook

In the first chapter of this book there is an overview of Lesbian and Gay rights issues in Europe and the US. In the second chapter there is a chronology of the movement. The third chapter provides biographies of key individuals in the movement on both sides of the debate. Chapter four is the public statements, laws, court decisions, etc that are critical to the movement. The fifth, sixth and seventh chapters provide resource listings for print, non-print and organizations involved in the Lesbian/Gay Movement. It is neatly laid out and provides to the point, concise information.

Gay Histories and Cultures: An Encyclopedia

This is a very comprehensive, two volume set addressing all of the major issues, people and topics in Gay studies. It also places a key emphasis on studying the gay movement worldwide and its role in various communities outside of the West.

The International Encyclopedia of Sexuality

This is a three volume set broken down by country that studies the sexual trends and patterns. Each chapter is written by groups of scholars of each country with information from various specialists to provide full information. It includes religious outlooks, concepts of love and marriage, sex education, masturbation, homo and bisexuality, etc. It is a wonderful resource to compare sexuality geographically as well as learning about a specific place.

Lesbian Almanac

This book was written to celebrate the accomplishments of the lesbian community. Thus it is a collection of lesbian history, lesbian legal issues, resources for lesbian mothers, etc. it covers the entire range of lesbian issues. It first discusses lesbian history through a timeline approach, then discusses notable North American lesbians. It also includes quotes from and about lesbians, a glossary of lesbian slang, signs and symbols and finally a huge section on lesbian issues that are entirely comprehensive. It includes statistics, tables, pictures in addition to text.

Lesbian Histories and Cultures: An Encyclopedia

This is the second volume that works along with Gay Histories and Cultures (listed above). It covers very similar issues but from the lesbian perspective instead.

Historical Dictionary of the Gay Liberation Movement: Gay Men and the Quest for Social Justice
Ref HQ76.5 H86 1999
This book covers the historical evolution of the Gay Rights Movement. It discusses the key groups, leaders, issues and strategies. The authors discuss these issues not only for the United States, nut globally as well. The book is in a dictionary type format with entries about all of these topics so it is important to know what you are looking for in order to use this book. There is also a chronology of the movement at the beginning that could be useful.

Contemporary Women’s Issues
This database covers women’s issues from 1992 to current with the option for the article in full text. It covers a variety of disciplines and pulls from 190 different countries. When you search you can do a basic keyword or author search but can also search by topic (i.e. abortion, welfare, etc) or by geographic region (i.e. Afghanistan). It was really simple to use and offered a proliferation of good articles.

Index to Legal Periodicals and Books
This database includes article citations to legal journals, yearbooks, institutes, bar association organs, law reviews, and government publications originating in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. It includes all areas and topics related to the law including court cases and decisions. It is citation only.

LegalTrac
This database provides full text articles about anything related to the legal system including court case information, articles and reviews from specialty law and bar association journals and information about other legal matters (taxes, regulations, etc.)

LexisNexis Academic
This database provides the full text articles primarily for major newspapers around the world. It is easy to use and provides a lot of article choices. Most of its sources are newspapers not academic journals, however.

P.A.I.S./Public Affairs Information Service
This database provides article citations and abstracts (not full text) for articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs.

PsycINFO
This offers citations and abstracts from a comprehensive coverage from articles, books, book chapters, journals, dissertations, and other sources related to the field of psychology from 45 countries.

Sociological Abstracts
This database provides citations and abstracts (not full text articles) to articles published in some 2300 journals in sociology, social welfare, and social policy, as well as other related topics in the social and behavioral sciences. It also includes citations to some books and many dissertations
