This is a collection of articles related to important areas of discussion by feminist theologian. The articles are in alphabetical order but there is also a contents page where it is easy to skim the topics covered. There is also a good bibliography to learn of further sources on these topics.

Dictionary of Feminist Theologies

This is a dictionary of terms, people and ideas related to feminist theology. Since it is dictionary in style the entries tend to be brief although some of the entries are lengthy then others. A good book for brainstorming ideas or doing background research since it is wide in scope but narrow in breadth.

Encyclopedia of Religion
Ref BL31 E46 1986
This is a huge multi volume set encyclopedia covering all issues related to religions globally including people, places, events and key terms. The entries are actually longer then expected given the scope of the work and also include bibliographic references.

Encyclopedia of Women and World Religion
Ref BL458 E58 1999
This is a multi-volume encyclopedia that covers women’s history and experience in world religions. Every religion is covered but the larger religions receive more coverage. The editors also tried to cover topics specifically related to women and their experiences rather then just religion in general. Each entry includes a bibliography as well.

Women’s Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects

This is a really interesting book that looks at the different symbols and objects used throughout history in different cultures, religions, communities. It includes descriptions as well as images. It is divided into chapters based on the particular symbol (i.e. flowers, zodiac, round motifs, etc.)

Women’s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets
Ref BL458 34 1996
This encyclopedia explores the idea of sexism and feminism by taking both a historical and a mythical approach. Thus it includes entries on the fantastical, the historical and the religious. The entries tend be short but have references and often times images accompanying them.

Databases

ATLA Religion Database
Provides only indexes and abstracts of journal articles, essays in multi-author books, and book reviews but covers nearly all areas of international religious research from 1949 to present. Basic searching is simple and user friendly.

Religious Periodicals
This database offers the full text articles on all topics of world religion but only from 1986 to the present.

Encyclopedia of Islam
Corresponds to volumes 1-9 of the printed Encyclopedia of Islam covering religion as well as the art, geography, history, etc. of countries where Islam has most significant presence. When search for women’s issues topics, there are many related articles. It is important to not, however, The electronic version is no more updated than the printed version, which has been published in stages since 1960. Therefore some content is over 40 years old. Articles are not dated, but contain bibliographies with dates so it takes a little more effort. The database does provide full text articles though.
