History

ABC-CLIO Companion to Women’s Progress in America
Ref HQ1410 F76 1994

Chronology of Women Worldwide: People, Places & Events That Shaped Women’s History
Ref HQ1121 C617 1996

Dictionary of British Women’s Organizations 1825-1960
Ref HQ1945 G67 2001
This is an annotated list of British women’s organizations from 1825 to 1960. They are alphabetically listed

Encyclopedia of Women in the Ancient World
Ref HQ 1127 S25 2001
This book covers the biographies of women from the ancient world as well as general themes that impacted the lives of women in ancient history. There are also maps, genealogical trees and indexes that list the women by time and place. Since the breadth covered is less then many of the other resources, it is better able to discuss the women of this time in greater detail.

Encyclopedia of Women in American History
HQ1410 .E53 2002
This encyclopedia is a three work set that covers women in American history. While it has alphabetical listings of famous women and topical entries on important events it also includes articles by scholars in the field of women’s history. It also includes a timeline (brief) of American women’s history at the beginning. Each volume covers a specific time period and then each volume is further divided into essays, articles and documents.

Encyclopedia of Women in the Middle Ages
Ref HQ1143 L38 2001
This book is dedicated to women of the middle ages. Primarily it is an A-Z listing of these women with biographic information about their lives, but it also contains a glossary of terms related to this time period, an introduction about the middle ages used to place these women in historical context and a bibliography for suggestions for further research. Since this book narrowed down the topic being covered, I think it is a really useful guide to the specific time period and is able to delve deeper into the topic since the breadth of the work is less.

Encyclopedia of Women’s History in America
Ref HQ1410 C85 1996
This encyclopedia is unique in the sense that it provides information about specific women as well as organizations, newspapers, books, speeches, conventions, demonstrations and even legislation that has been relevant to the lives of women throughout American history. While the entries are not necessarily very long or extensive, they are wide in scope and also include a section for further information.

Handbook of American Women’s History
Ref HQ1410 H36 2000
This is huge book with tons of information. In addition to the normal encyclopedic entries on everything having to do with women’s history in America, it also includes documents and images as well as bibliographic listings. The entries tend to be short but to the point.

Routledge Historical Atlas of Women in America
Ref H1410 P68 2000
This book is more of a narrative approach to women’s history with sections on each time period chronologically. Each section includes narrative as well as maps, pictures, tables and statistics about women’s role in American society. It is colorful and easy to read.

What American Women Did, 1789-1920: A Year-by-Year Reference
Ref HQ1154 C665 2001
This is a book about American women between 1789 and 1920. Each year is divided into sections domesticity, work, education and scholarship, arts, joining forces, and law and politics. It is written as a narrative but includes statistical information when necessary.

Women’s Progress in America
Ref HQ1410 F76 1994
This encyclopedia covers people, court cases, laws, organizations, publications, etc. about or related to women’s achievements in American history. It primarily focuses on the seventeenth and eighteenth century since there is less information published about these times. In addition to the main entries, there is also a chronology section that briefly goes through American history highlighting women’s achievements.

Women’s World: A Timeline of Women in History
Ref HQ1122 F69 1995
This book is a chronology of women’s history by marking certain people, events, and works within the context of the time. Each year is divided into categories of information: Politics/Law/War; Religion/Education/Everyday Life; Science/Technology/Medicine; and Arts/Literature. Rather then breaking it down alphabetically, I think this format is helpful because you can look up particular eras and place everything within this context.

Bibliographies of Primary Sources

And So to Bed: A Bibliography of Women’s Diaries Published in English
Ref Z5301 H38 1997
This is a bibliographic source specifically of diaries. While not all the diaries were originally written in English, this only includes listings of English translations. Each entry does include a short description of the work which is helpful and is also divided by date of publication which is nice if you are looking for primary source readings for a specific time period.

British Diaries: An Annotated Bibliography of British Diaries Written Between 1442 and 1942
Ref Z2014 D5 M3

Pen is Ours: A Listing of Writings by and about African-American Women before 1910 with Secondary Bibliography to the Present
Ref Z1229 N39 Y44 1991
This is a listing of narratives by African American women from 1910 to present. The listings are not annotated which makes this resource a little harder to use if you are not looking up a specific woman or time period.

Personal Writings by Women to 1900: A Bibliography of American and British Writers
Ref Z1229 W8 D38 1989
This is a bibliography of women’s narratives focused on women in Britain and the United States only. Most of the entries are not annotated, however, and only a few have descriptions about what they are about which makes this resource a little less helpful then others. If you know the author or woman you are searching for this would be helpful, however.

Published Diaries and Letters of American Women: An Annotated Bibliography
Ref 5305 U5 G66 1987

Through a Woman’s I: An Annotated Bibliography of American Women’s Autobiographical Writings, 1946-1976
Ref Z7963 B6 A32 1983
This is an annotated bibliography of American women’s bibliographic writings from 1946-1976. Each of the listings are for narratives that are at least 25 pages in length—so only include substantial works. The editors not only include more traditional autobiographies but also diaries, letters, travel accounts, etc. The annotations are fairly short but this book does offer a good list of references to personal accounts which are ideal for primary source readings.

Women in Context: Two Hundred Years of British Women Autobiographers: A Reference Guide and Reader
Ref HQ1593 A3 K26 1997
This is a collection of British women autobiographers. They are listed in alphabetical order and include biography, major themes or issues discussed as well as the authors ideas/opinions, chronology, and the bibliographic information about the works. Each entry places the author in historical context. There are also author indexes in the back that allow readers to find women based on particular categories or topics (i.e. dates, nationalities, vocations, etc.)
