Contemporary Lesbian Writers of the United States: A Bio-Bibliographical Sourcebook
Ref PS153 L46 C65 1993
This book is an alphabetical listing of lesbian writers. Each listing includes a biography, major works and themes, critical reception and a bibliography. This would be a great place to find reading lists of writers being researched since the bibliographies are extensive and the section on major themes also places the writer contextually and thus leads to further research ideas.

Encyclopedia of Feminist Literary Theory
Ref PN98 W64 1997
This is an encyclopedia of feminist literary scholars in the US and Britain since the 1970s. It includes entries not only of people but also of critical terms in feminist literary studies. In this way it could be used more as a desk reference and then also as a resource if you know a specific feminist literary scholar to investigate.

Feminist Criticism of American Women Poets: An Annotated Bibliography, 1975-1993
Ref PS151 S35 1994
This is a bibliographic listing of feminist literary criticism and theory of poetry from 1975-1993. It is more helpful them many bibliographies, however, because it is very well annotated. The first half of the book is on American theory; the second half on analyzing poetry—with the aim to divide the book by distinguishing between woman as reader and woman as writer. It could be helpful in finding resources but it is also overwhelming if you do not have an idea about what you are looking for since it is just listing after listing of books, dissertations and articles.

Feminist Writers
Ref PN451 F46 1996
This book provides an encyclopedic type style for various feminists authors. Each entry includes biographic information, bibliographic listings, and a basic contextual description of the author and time period. This resource is most helpful as a starting point in research or if you are looking up a specific author since you can not search by topic, time period, or anything else.

Gay and Lesbian American Plays: An Annotated Bibliography
Ref PS153 G38 F87 1993
This is a bibliographic work containing listings of gay and lesbian American playwrights. The listings include biographic information, information about the play (number of acts, where performed, etc) and also an annotation. In addition to looking up playwrights by name there are also lists to look up by subject of the play, by theatre and by title of the play.

Gay & Lesbian Literature
Ref PN56 H57 G36 1994 and
Volume 2: Ref PN56 H57 G361 1998
This book offers entries on a variety of Gay and Lesbian authors or people that address Gay and Lesbian issues—in fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry, editors, etc. It includes a biography of the author, a complete bibliography of all there works and other critical information. This would be an excellent resource as a jumping off point for creating reading lists of Gay and Lesbian writers or simply exploring an author currently known further.

Images in the Dark: An Encyclopedia of Gay and Lesbian Film and Video
Ref PN1995.9 H55 M87 1994

Oxford Companion to Women’s Writing in the United States
Ref PS147 O94 1995
This is a huge resource and the book is as big as it is comprehensive. It is encyclopedic in form, simply alphabetically listing authors, poets, terminology, genres, etc. with short entries about each. Each entry also contains reference points as well. It is interesting to flip through since there is so much information but really would be of most help if you knew exactly what you were looking up as a jumping off point. Or if you had a specific question about a subject related to women’s writing in the United States.

Reel Women: Pioneers of the Cinema, 1896 to the Present
Ref PN1998.2 A24 1991
This is sort of like an encyclopedia of women in the cinema. It is divided into categories based on jobs in the cinema (producers, directors, etc), women of color, and certain film genres. Within each category are entries of women and lists of their films.

St. James Press Gay & Lesbian Almanac
Ref HQ76.3 U5 S75 1998

Third World Women’s Literatures: A Dictionary and Guide to Materials in English
Ref PN849 U43 F58 1995
This is an encyclopedic type work about third world women authors providing background information and also bibliographic lists of English translations. Since it is just an alphabetical list, however, you need to know whom you are looking for or it can be used just to flip through to find interesting authors from various countries. In the back there is a listing for anthologies broken down by geographic area in the world that could be useful.

Women Playwrights of Diversity: A Bio-Bibliographical Sourcebook
Ref PS338 W6 P48 1997
This book is a biographical encyclopedia of playwrights. In addition, however, there are separate listings for African American, Asian American, Latina and lesbian playwrights at the end. This could be helpful is focusing on a particular group of women. The entries include brief biographies, descriptions of plays, selected production history, play availability, awards and a bibliography of reviews.

Women Writers in the United States: A Timeline of Literary, Cultural, and Social History
Ref PS147 DF38 1996
This book actually was written as an addendum to The Oxford Companion to Women’s Writing in the United States. It takes a much more historical look at women of other eras. It is presented not by subject or theme of the author but on a timeline approach, which is helpful because you can understand the thinking on all subjects at a given time period and see how they all interplayed with one another. It is a long time line that gives the year, the prominent texts and the context in which they were written.
