Danzón

Luna Negra Dance Theater, Turtle Island String Quartet & Paquito D'Rivera

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

7:30 pm

Reynolds Auditorium

RJ Reynolds High School

After working with artists from all over the Latino world, Luna Negra Dance Theater Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro returns to his roots for the company's 10th Anniversary season with a new work called Danzón. The influenceof Danzón (the official dance of Cuba) can be heard in virtually all Cuban music genres. In Danzón, Luna Negra joins the bold and ingenious Turtle Island Quartet, and legendary composer and performer Paquito D'Rivera. Turtle Island and Mr. D'Rivera have collectively won eleven Grammy Awards.

Danzón is a commission of the University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center and the Music Center at Strathmore. In this partnership with "the Turtles" and D'Rivera. Vilaro is taking this traditional and quintessentially Cuban dance form and reinventing and reinvigorationg it as a modern work of art. In doing so, he is both introducing mainstream American audiences to a thriving Latino tradition and creating a milestone moment in the continuity of Latino artistic expression.

This event is in collaboration with the Arts Magnet program of Reynolds High School and the Cuba Project Collective of the Department of Romance Languages at WFU. An all-school performance for students at Reynolds, followed by workshops and classes with the artists, will precede the public performance. At Wake Forest, the art exhibit, Cuban Artists' Books and Prints, will be on view in the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery until October 6.

Nina Lucas, Director of Dance and Associate Professor and Linda Howe, Associate Professor in the Dept of Romance Languages and Director of the Cuba Project, will be giving the pre-performance talk at Reynolds High School.
