Ciaran Carson

“Carson’s translation of “The Midnight Court” is that rarest of things: a small and utterly enjoyable masterpiece. ... What Carson offers the willing in these 60 pages of poetry with a brief introduction is a rollicking evening of instruction in the pleasures of a long and entertaining poem.”

Vona Groarke
Flight and Earlier Poems

Flight and Earlier Poems

"Groarke's poems often have an air of simplicity, as though they were no more involved than the Irish songs from which many of them are partly descended. But their grounded, private acuteness, their silent insistence on discovering their own methods, make them subtler and more complex than the poems of most of Groarke's more extravagantly ambitious contemporaries." Brian Phillips, Poetry

Thomas Kinsella
Poems 1956-1973

Poems 1956-1973

In 1972, the Irish poet Thomas Kinsella decided to found his own imprint, the Peppercanister Press. He wanted to publish work quickly and at regular intervals in order to get a sense of his progress, but felt frustrated with magazine publications, believing that they did not present his work in the best way. As Kinsella himself has remarked: "Peppercanister became an alternative to the publication of poetry in literary journals. I had always found this unsatisfactory, with the poems placed between stories and articles and disappearing with a particular issue."

Michael Longley
Collected Poems

longley collected

“...a contemporary who should endure over the life of our language.” Donald Hall

“War--what it does to combatants and to their children--becomes a preoccupation throughout Longley’s work. ... Yet marital love and tenderness, domestic calm and pastoral counterpoise also stand among Longley's signature subjects. ... Longley’s genius is pastoral and commemorative. ...” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

John Montague
A Slow Dance

A Slow Dance

A Slow Dance was the first volume published by Wake Forest University Press, a joint publication with The Dolmen Press and Oxford University Press.

From the 1975 cover: "A dance of death and life is suggested by the developing extremism of John Montague's idiom in this collection, and the title sequence in particular mimes a deep psychic experience of intimacy with the earth, caused, perhaps by the poet's return to this native Ireland after a decade in exile."
