Peppercanister Poems 1972-1978
by Thomas Kinsella
In 1972, the Irish poet Thomas Kinsella decided to found his own imprint, the Peppercanister Press. He wanted to publish work quickly and at regular intervals in order to get a sense of his progress. Kinsella remarked: "Peppercanister became an alternative to the publication of poetry in literary journals. I had always found this unsatisfactory, with the poems placed between stories and articles and disappearing with a particular issue."
The Peppercanister Press takes its name from St. Stephen's Church on Upper Mount Street, Dublin, known locally as 'the Peppercanister' because of the steeple's visual resemblance to a peppershaker. The church was visible from Kinsella's home at the time. In this edition, which contains the first six years of publication, Wake Forest remains true to the high standard of design and production notable in the Peppercanister Press.
